going to buy used mach 1, what should I look for?

hi im going to buy a used mach 1 soon. next week i will go check out a mach 1 nearby, but i would like some advice on what i should look for.

it only has 15k miles and carfax comes up clean. im not too good with cars but if someone can let me know what things i should look for i would be thankful. car is manual transmission if that matters.

Talk to the owner, if he is young ask a lot of questions, like how fast is it, does it do burn outs, how fast have you had it up to, etc. them start looking for oil leaks, ticking in the motor, when do you change the oil/filter what kind of oil.
If he says it;s fast and can burn the back tires off and it's not Comp Orange Walk away.

Along with the above...
I've also heard to ask what kind of time the car gets in the 1/4 mile. If they can tell you then look out!

You should look for a steering wheel and doors. Those are important.

Re: going to buy used mach 1, what should I look for?

1. Maintenance records
2. Check the real wheel well area for evidence of the burn outs.
3. engine compartment: clean? evidence of things removed, like holes in the intake tube, around the strut tower, other holes that don't look like the factory put them there.
4. if factory radio, make sure the that multiple CD's load and unload ok.
5. underneath car for signs of abuse, parts removed, welding of subframe connectors, torque box.
6.any mods at all to the car

a few to start.

Re: going to buy used mach 1, what should I look for?

I dont know about everywhere but I know in MD sub-frame connecters can make a car fail inspection. I dont know if it was just that particular car and they had been welded on by an idiot, but they told me the car was not going to pass because of that.

Check for all 8 cylinders.

Roll cage, slicks in rear, skinnys up front, racing seats, plexi-glass windows, gutted interior, all signs it may have seen the track once or twice.

if its a stick make sure everything feels smooth. some of the trannys are prone to grinding between 1-2 and 2-3.

Re: going to buy used mach 1, what should I look for?

Though a compression test would be a great thing to check; I dont think many owners would allow someone to do that to there car or would want them to do it.

One or two burnouts would be OK as long as it was by a qualified driver. That be me.

I guess i wouldnt buy that car then .

Its less the 2 hours of work and at the cost of the buyer , and in todays market sellers will do just about anything .

Exactly, First you woundt buy it,.... second of all, the seller woundt sell it to you, easy as that ! He would be like" Are you crazy? You want to do what to my car? "
I agree, its a great reassurance on the motor, But I havent met anyone in my life, who has done that or spent the labor or money on it. Esp on a car that was a weekend or DD. The only time I could see someone doing that would be buying a high end purchase of a race car..

Re: going to buy used mach 1, what should I look for?

ok im going to look at another mach 1 on friday with 20k miles. what should i look for when test driving? what about under the hood? and how can i check the tires to see when they were made (i dont know a lot about cars)

what is a compression test? im going to bring it to mechanic before i buy and have them check everything. is that good enough?

how do i check for leaks? (i dont know what to look for)
