got a code of p0420 in 01 ford focus do you think bad cat. latley car has lacked power it hesitates and it has 187000 miles on the motor . i also think valve guides are gone because at startup get an oil smell which could also speed up cat death.should i repalce cat or just cut it out and put a piece of pipe in its place only need car to last till next june . also is there a way of checking o2s with the predetor handheld tuner

either a bad cat or bad o2 sensor. cut the cat out, straight pipe it, and make your own o2 simmulator. problem solved.
