2nd gear grind and Warranty question...

Ok, well I purchased my Mach 1 with 14k miles about two weeks ago, and just a week ago I noticed that it was experiencing the 1st to 2nd gear grind, which there is a TSB out for. I wasn't experiencing it before then.

I have an aftermarket extended warranty through Zurich, and the car is up at the shop right now. I've filed a claim, but this is what is happening:

Zurich is saying that they cannot tell me if the part will be covered until the transmission is tore down and apart. If they decide that the part isn't covered or isn't in need of repair, or this was a "pre-existing issue" then they won't cover it and I'd have to pay for it.

They told me that they would cover it if it is a mechanical breakdown which is "the failure of a covered part because of a mechanical defect or faulty workmanship by the manufacturer which renders the coverd part incapable of performing the function for which it was designed". They will not cover it if it is found to be a "pre-existing condition" showing excessive wear (basically if it was an issue before I purchased it)

So my question is, do you all think this will be covered or think they'll make me pay for it?

If they are already telling you stuff like this, I'd say forget about them covering it. Toss in the the colonel's secret sauce and be on your way. Those extended warranty companies are HORRIBLE. Just my opinion on those from someone who used to see those kind of warranties denied all the time at the dealership. That's how those extended warranty companies stay in business.

I might just do that, and forget about the hassle.

But here is my question....

....if I decide not to do it, and cancel the claim, and a year down the road or so I get a 2nd gear lock out or it kicks it out of 2nd gear, then can I make another claim, and in that case, would they cover it?

Re: 2nd gear grind and Warranty question...

UPDATE:

Warranty company pretty much told me they aren't going to cover it since it's a "pre-existing condition".

I'm having the dealership put in the Colonel's sauce and we'll see how that goes, I'll make sure to report up on it!

Re: 2nd gear grind and Warranty question...

It may take some time, remember the cold is going to make any issues like these more noticeable. The sauce made my shifting a fair bit smoother, but the addition of a firewall adjuster made it even better.

It will only get worse Im afraid. Mine has been rebuilt 2x 1st at 7k second at 25K both under warranty.
Get ready to spend some cash my man it wont go away with "special sauce" cuz the reason it is grinding is the synchros are already toast and no miracle fix is going to make them magically fix themselves...

Re: 2nd gear grind and Warranty question...

Are you sure it's third gear lockout and not how you are shifting the transmission? I don't know how long you have had your MGW, but I would occasionally miss 3rd when I first installed mine and I thought there was something wrong. I was just putting too much force on the side of the shifter because of the angle I had the shifter turned.

Re: 2nd gear grind and Warranty question...

There was a TSB on the second gear grind when cold.(manufacturers defect) I have it and just drive it easy til it warms up and no problem. I'll be going in for my 3rd gear syncro replacement soon as it is parked for winter. Ford ESP Powertrain warranty. Aftermarket warranty companies suck.

Check these out.

Yeah, that's all fine and dandy for those of you who have the original ford esp warranty but for those of us who will be purchasing their machs from a private party, we cannot purchase the Ford ESP anymore Which really really bites.

Re: 2nd gear grind and Warranty question...

Start saving money and get a good tranny when this one goes out... There are lots of options out there... T56's(get a 26spline variant either viper spec or cobra R with big output shaft), PMP 3650, all the tko(1,2,3,500,600) variants, liberty's 5speed based on the tko(dunno if it comes in a synchronized variant though.)

Who says you are going to have any T3650 transmission issues at all? I don't. If you're looking to buy a Mach and it has the grind or lockout problems, simply walk away from that one. You don't need a Ford ESP to do that.

it worked for me!

Also, about the tranny, I don't trust the stock tranny that much and have my eye on the PMP 3650 for this summer (+ clutch, flywheel, FRPP driveshaft)

Re: 2nd gear grind and Warranty question...

One other step to take before you go the new tranny route is to replace your factory quadrant with an aftermarket setup. I'd recommend the Fiore quadrant and firewall adjuster. I had similar issues, had my tranny rebuilt, then replaced, and then the new one rebuilt (all under warranty). Immediately after I got it back from the second rebuild, it still had the lockout. Changed to the new quadrant/adjuster, and the problem vanished and has never come back.
