best budget tire

It's that time again for me. But funds are a little low. What is the best tire in the $99-150 a piece range? Any help?

Re: best budget tire

I like my Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval I got those for 150.

I was also looking at the BFGoodrich g-Force Sport (111.00) a little cheaper but I could not find them in stock anywhere when I needed tires.

Re: best budget tire

I have 275 fronts from Maxxis that were something like $90 each and 315 rears from Summito that were in the $130 range each. Been happy with them so far after driving on them daily for about 9 months.

Have a set on mine and they work great for a DD. Also have a little longer tread life then the 555's

Re: best budget tire

Toyo Proxes 4 $101 per tire

http://www.tiredeals4less.com/TOYO_P..._99W_P1968.cfm

I had 555 on my front and it always had a bad vibration even after many rebalances. Put toyos on and it is now smooth as silk. IMO best bang for the buck tire.

Re: best budget tire

I think the Sumitomo HTR-Z are killer for the money. I can get them for $57.00 a piece plus about 6.00 a piece to ship. Go to tirerack.com and read the reviews on it. Almost everyone agrees that for the money you can't beat them. Most are sports car owners too.

I'm sure I could. I just ordered two for the front of my car and the total was $121.00. Thats not bad.

I don't know how I'd get them shipped to everyone though. Tirerack may only ship them here but I can check. Any other ideas on how to make this work?
Here are the prices for the different sizes
245/45/17 $57.00
275/40/17 $79.00
315/35/17 $92.00

Re: best budget tire

Not to change the subject, but is there a 245/17 tire I could use
that lasts a while and will hook up on the street? I am getting
about 300hp at the rear wheel with 4:10 gears.

My numbers are close to yours off the spray. I also have 4.10's like you do. I haven't found a street tire that hooks decent enough for that 1st-2nd shift. I have bought 6 sets of DR's in about 2 years for my car. That is the price I pay to play. The way I look at it, if I had street tires on the back they'd wear just as fast from spinning plus I wouldn't have traction. At least with DR's I know that they'll hook.

Is there a 245/17 DR for the street that you recommend?
Or am I mistaken to think you can run DR's on the street?
My expectations might be too high in this regard. I might
just have to find a decent street tire and try not to burn
smoke in the 1-2 shift (in spirited driving).

That's what DR's are for...the street. That's why they are DOT approved. I have owned every DR brand and they vary depending on the cars purpose and HP. The MT DR's are the best for hooking at the track or street but you'd be lucky to get 10k miles out of a set and they are rather expensive. The BFG's are in the middle traction wise. They hook better than Nittos and they're the cheapest but the tires have practically no tread when new. They make two different BFG DR's (a DR1 and DR2). Nittos are probably the most practical DR of them all. They do not hook that great at the track but mine always seemed to hook well on the street. They last the longest (12k-14k miles) and are very good on wet roads, which is important to me. I think Discount Tire Direct has been selling the 275/40/17's for like 120 or 140 a tire. Hope that helped

Good info...I was wondering what people thought about DRs in the wet.

Yes. They do look a little weird though. The tire seems to fill out the fenderwell alot more than the 245/45's. I have a set of 275/40's mounted on my factory rear stockers that I took off. I ordered the 315/35/17 BFG's to replace them. If I know we are going to be street racing I will swap out the 10.5's for the stockers and 275's. It is hard to find a perfect tire/rim combo that does everything you need. I will eventually get a pair of 15x10 weld rims with some slicks for the track and just run Nitto DR's for the street.

Re: best budget tire

BFGoodrich g-Force Sport

I put these on and they have better traction than the Goodyears. They still will spin on the 1-2 shift but not nearly as bad. I might need to try out those Nittos though.
