My Dad would love this, nice Veterans tribute

This touched me. My uncle George passed away about 5 weeks ago. He survived the beach on 6 June 1944. I was 16 before I knew he served at all, he was a great American.

My dad never discussed his service in the Pacific until I returned from Iraq the first time. I could have heard the stories before then but he knew I wouldn't really understand. The vets out there will get this.

Ten minute video but time well spent.

Yeap got a little misty-eyed myself. We're losing about 1,000 of those guys a day. Honor them while you can.

Very good point indeed. My dad had 7 brothers and 7 sisters so I had 11 uncles that served in WWII. Two died in the war, one was disabled during training, six have passed in the last 18 months. We still have my dad and his brother, the two oldest boys with us.

Two of his sisters served in Europe and one sister-in-law was a WASP here in the states. They also passed in the last 5 years.

We would live in a much different world if not for the Vets and citizens from that era. We need that kind of dedication today!!!!!

Nice comment Bill.

Great link! I'm reading "Beyond Band of Brothers-The War Memoirs Of Major **** Winters" right now and it's an awesome read! I love to meet WWII vets and hear their stories. So many great stories and so many things I can learn from them, not just about the war, but about life. Great folks!

Re: My Dad would love this, nice Veterans tribute

My one grandfather served in Europe in WWII..he passed away last summer, but I was fortunate enough to sit down with him over the years and hear the stories of what he saw and went through. I still see him as the quiet, gentle, old Pollock that he was and it was hard to imagine him hurting anyone. I miss him and I miss his stories.

I will miss talking with these guys and as you stated above, it's not just WWII that makes them great role models. My first flight instructor was also the Dean of Student services at my college. We flew together for 4 years, enough for me to go from student pilot and become a flight instructor and I never knew about his war time service. I suspected he was very senior when he flew A4's in Vietnam but had no idea about his background. He just looked forward and was very humble.

I now know he flew in WWII (F4U, F8F), Korea F9F, and Vietnam in the Skyhawk. I think knowing that would have been intimidating. As most military pilots do, I wanted to know if he thought I flew good enough to have been a fighter pilot in WWII. He said yes but better pilots died and some with less skill survived. He said it was more important that we had pilots ready for the next time. I think of him when I encounter the rare "war hero" types, he was a great American.

Very true, and it's not just WWII vets, I enjoy meeting all veterans, I'm just really "into" WWII history right now as well as that whole time period for this country. I find it amusing that my previous statement was censored.
