I drove my buddy's 01 T/A this weekend

This weekend, one of my buddies bought a 01 Trans Am auto, bone stock with 16,000 miles. He came over and showed it off and said he wanted to hear the exhaust. Naturally, he asked me to take it out and see what I think. He showed respect for the Mach as he said "it ain't as fast as the Mach but I'll try to make it faster".

Well, my opinion, for being bone stock with an auto and a heavy car, it really is pretty strong. Not nearly as much as the Mach 5 spd in stock form. I feel that the T/A cornered better and had less body roll than the Mach. However, you could definately feel the weight as it felt less nimble and agile as the Mach. In first gear from a roll it would only chirp the tires .
I told him to do some good bolt on mods, like full exhaust and induction and it would be completely different. Those LS1s definately respond better to mods than the Mach does. I am also trying to talk him into getting a Cam change also.

BTW, it is SUPER QUIET!

My conclusion, it is really cool but, it should have been a 6spd though. I still would have bought a Mach.

Re: I drove my buddy's 01 T/A this weekend

My roomate has a 99 TA that used to be auto (we swapped it out for the 6 spd). its got over 100k mile on it and its still quite a beast. Did all the minor bolt ons plus new cams and springs. That thing is loud as balls! It can definitly take the Mach after all those mods but maybe that will change after the summer

I just don't like the ride of em. My boss had one when I was on the A/C Carrier and it rode so dang rough. Anytime we had to go somewhere I offered to drive cause I did nto want the snot knocked out to my from his suspension. His car was a pretty strong runner though just did not care for the ride.

I really like the T/A's exterior. The interior is cheap looking, especially the way the guages are layed out. They nice and can be really fast with some bolt ons. I would get one but I wouldn't trade the mach for one, no way. I wouldn't even trade a fox body for one.

Re: I drove my buddy's 01 T/A this weekend

i drove a 2002 T/A WS6 6spd a few days before the mach, and it was a nice running little car and to be completly honest it was a toss up but i just couldnt resist the Torch Red mach vs the white/tan T/a. wheither that made up my mind at the time i'm not sure. needless to say im happy though and i prefer Ford

LOL a turd??? Even with an auto its capable of beating a mach in the 1/4 and will more then likley beat it on the freeway. The automatic in those cars are very good trannys.

BTW the reason gm killed the fbod was finacial, the only thing wrong with the car was it wasnt selling.

I don't think this is completely accurate, I can take my buddies T/A from a stop, from a roll he is pretty fast will evently leave me the faster we go.

I only said its "capable" of happening not "it will happen." Auto ls1s are almost as fast as the 6 spds. I actually have a pretty good understanding of ls1s cuz i hang out with a lot of people who build them.

Re: I drove my buddy's 01 T/A this weekend

Hey, just tell your buddy to leave the factory exhaust on there. Add in a QTP electronic cutout, a lid, and a 150 shot and it will good for low 12's with good tires. Now if you Change out the Torque converter(3000rpm or higher) and he'll be good for mid to high 11's! Man those LS1's love some juice!!!!!

Like others have said, I really like the looks but the interior is a little bit hurting, I just can't get over the in a bathtub feeling when you're in those cars. They def haul buns like a bread truck though.

Re: I drove my buddy's 01 T/A this weekend

let's be honest and sincere. unbiased.... the LS1 is a better engine than our 4.6 DOHC. Oh my Gosh... did he just say.... YES I DID!!! It's stronger, more durable and has much more potential. N/A that engine is a monster. Stop hating. That car can and will beat a stock Mach. And throwing the mods game out there, I would still give the advantage to the LS1. Sorry... my bro has a 2002 Turbo Camaro SS... he owns Terminators. And all that at only boosting 11 lbs... puts down about 570rwhp. that is a beast.

Well I must have a factory freak because my mach is stock and he has a 6 speed T/A and I can take him from a stand still.

It is a good and durable engine, its been around for what 40 or so years. Like I siad I like the car and that includes its performance, it is on the same level as the Mach.

Re: I drove my buddy's 01 T/A this weekend

I've driven WS6's '01 and it pulls like a damned raped ape. A cam and full exhaust are a good thing for an LS1...

We'll see just how good it is in the fall ....

I liked the Camaro better than the firebird/transam for appearance...

Heres a picture of my stolen/wrecked firebird

Crap! Man, that had to hurt. Looks like a nice Bird before the wreck. I must admit, it is a LOT harder to steal a Ford than a GM.

Re: I drove my buddy's 01 T/A this weekend

One day I think people will finally start to understand, you don't have to compare cars to have fun. You bought what you bought for the reason you bought it, to have fun!!!!! But believe me I don't care who has what, This 4.6 dohc has 800 hp or this 5.7 ls1 has 900 hp. bottom line is that there will always be someone out there faster than you!!!!! the most money wins when you compare cars, best man(or woman) wins when you compare timeslips!!!!!

Re: I drove my buddy's 01 T/A this weekend

I think the one with the most money will win on timeslips too, that is until everything is pushed to the max performance wise, then the best driver (or the one with the most luck) will win.

Yeah not that the Stang is worlds ahead or anything I guess I really just don't like the seating position or how it feels like your lookin over a deck of an aircraft carrier when you're behind the wheel. Then again sitting in a Mustang is like sitting on a McDonald's booster seat.

Re: I drove my buddy's 01 T/A this weekend

The only thing I don't like about F-bodys is how you sit in them and the interior, I hate to ghetto lean, and the interior is too plasticky.... I was seriously looking into GTO's before getting the Mach, because I am a big fan of Holdens, but they wanted too much money for them.... Hell, I got my mach for $19k with 18k miles from a dealership! GTO's were $25k+ , even 04's.....
