Shelby GT 500 Orders/Wait list? News!

My wife works for our local high volume Ford dealer here in Michigan. And i asked her to find out as many deatails about the Shelby GT 500. So she went right to her source sales manager and here is what he had to say. He said "you have better chances at winning the lottery 3 times over than purchasing a Shelby GT-500". The only people that will be able to purchase one are people that are in positions of power and have lots and lots of money to spend. There will likely be a mark up between 10k and 20k. Production will be around 8000 units. Most dealerships will not get any. Those that are lucky to get them may get one or two. Most sales will take place via silent auctions which means people of power and wealth will silently put a bid in a envelope to be submitted. Also, there is NO list and NO garuntees for those people that have been put on a made up list that they will get a chance to place a silent bid. Also note, Those people that have put money down for being on that fake list.... the dealer will be making intrest on your money in case you didnt know. So i hate to say it but if your not in a high position of power and extremely wealthy... you will not be getting a Shelby GT-500 Mustang.

I told everyone so.

I remember the pipe dreams of some who thought they would get one for under 40k.

I am afraid of this happening as well. The demand for these cars will be extremely high!

I guess I will just have to pass on the new shelby. For the amount of money they are talking about, 40k-60k or more, I think I would rather find a decent used gt-350, or build my own...

Yeah, makes sence. What is really damning to me about this information is the amount of public demand that wish to buy one and only 8000 units are projected. I was willing to pay 40k for it which i wouldnt normaly pay for a vehicle, but the fact that you have to fit this demographic in order to get one is upsetting.

Re: Shelby GT 500 Orders/Wait list? News!

I'm actually going to purchase one, when they do come out.

I have a feeling they will not be as rare as they hype is saying. I expect the first ones to hit the lots to go for at least 10k over retail. That is expected. But to demand 10k over retail on the "2nd shipment" of the vehicles is going to be far fetch.

Look at then numbers of the previous mustang cobras.... and I know for a fact Feb 05, a local dealer was selling brand new 04 cobras for under 30K.

1999-03 SVT Mustang Cobra

1999 Cobra Coupe
Totals: 4040

1999 Cobra Convertible
Totals: 4055

2000 SVT Mustang Cobra - Did not make production
2001 Cobra Coupe
Totals: 3,867

2001 Cobra Convertible
Totals: 3,384

2002 Cobra - None made for USA - 100 models were made and shipped to Austrailia

2003 Cobra Coupe/Convertible
Totals: 13,776

2004 Cobra Coupe/Convertible
Totals: 5,664

I think thats wishfull thinking dude. We're not talking about just any cobra we're talking about a SHELBY with almost 500 horse. And i doubt they will continue to make them year after year like the normal cobras.

Re: Shelby GT 500 Orders/Wait list? News!

I highly doubt ford is gonna produce 7000-9000 cars for them to be all sold at silent auctions. There may be a few they will be done like that but i bet most will be on sale for the normal public to buy.
The car isnt even completely finalized so basically anything we hear can be taken with a grain of salt.
This posting is just like a few that were put out before the 03's were out, and what do ya know seems like everyone and there freaking grandma has 1 and you sure as heck didnt have be in power or have wealth to get one

Just my opinions and views from being around the last few times for the newest cobra.

Iam just stating what i was being told from our Ford dealer where my wife works at. I would have been a presepctive buyer myself had i not hear this information. They did this same thing when the Ford GT's came through our dealer and that is why the cost of those were so much higher over MSRP. Of course the Shelbys are on a much lower scale so you have to expect that the welathy are going to be all over them.

Every dealer has a different story on this matter.

There's difference on opinions between dealers here in houston. One I talked to is taking deposits, and the other is saying it's not even a car yet.

But I guess in the end we will all know what really is going to happen.

Re: Shelby GT 500 Orders/Wait list? News!

I'll be on the "wait list" all right until at least mid 2008. Ford best be careful with what Dodge has planned for the next few year or their maybe a lot of people jumping. We haven’t seen the new designs yet but they already have the engines and platforms to make some pretty sweet cars. MOPAR’s were awesome in the 60’s! The SRT will be a remodeled car of it’s own soon, The EVO will have a rebranded Dodge logo, and of course the 2 door Challenger is scheduled to come out in 09. Now if Chevy gets back into the game Ford won’t have much choice but to sell their wares at a realistic price. I’ll pass on a $50k to $60k mustang; if I were to do that I’d have to consider a Vette. Sorry Ford and your out of control dealer networks.

I have a Mach so I can afford to wait and just mod it.

Re: Shelby GT 500 Orders/Wait list? News!

THE WEALTHY????????? Are you kidding me..................Most people with SICK amounts of money (i.e. the "wealthy") don't know the difference between an overhead cam or an overhead storage compartment..............Those people are buying cars that are completely unachievable goals for 99.9% of the people on this forum (cars $150K plus, or thereabout).

Sure, you'll have several hundreds of Muscle Enthusiasts, that are VERY well off, and can buy 2 or 3 Shelbys cash if they wanted to...........but why would they?? The percentage of these so-called wealthy people buying a Mustang on a silent bid couldn't possibly be higher than MAAAAAAAAAAAYBE 8-10% of total sales..........what's that like 700-800 Cobras..................think about it.......is THAT even a realistic figure?? Something to think about.................

Plus, knowing Ford, they'll build about 12,000 of them, and then try to figure out how to get rid of all the extra inventory in the lots come end of the model year, because the dealers tried to keep a premium over MSRP for the whole year..........

It's $$$ and SENSE............not cents.

I said this before,How can a dealer take a deposit on a car that hasn't been made yet??? The dealers don't have a clue it's all a guessing game!!!

Re: Shelby GT 500 Orders/Wait list? News!

Even if they build 8000 Shelby’s for a couple years that’s a huge number compared to the old cars from the 60’s. Back then people brought them to drive; there are far too many people investing in cars thinking their going to be going up 400 or 500 percent like the older models did. This is happening in every collectable market from coin collecting to sports card collecting. There’s going to be far too many of these around in 20 or 30 years IMO. They will still be sweet but you’re not going to retire on buying one.

Re: Shelby GT 500 Orders/Wait list? News!

With all due respect to Orange Whip and his wife, I'm not buying what the sales manager is saying. The cars will show up at a large number of dealerships all over the country, and one guy thinks he has the nationwide market figured out?

I'm sure the cars will be hard to come by, but each dealer gets to decide how to sell his allocated car or cars. Some will be sold on e-bay, some will go to long time customers of a dealership, some will be sold on the floor with markups, maybe a few will be sold thru silent auctions to rich people who don't know much about Mustangs.

Time will tell. The speculation serves no purpose.

Re: Shelby GT 500 Orders/Wait list? News!

It's called good marketing folks, and Ford is doing one heck of job in that arena.
Mustang popularity has exploded in the last few years, especially since the beloved Camaro and Firebird have become extinct.

The new Cobra is destined to take down the Vette, and this is all good stuff.

But at the end of the day, there will be Cobras sitting on dealers lots, and will be sold at MSRP or under come end of year. I agree, I think there will be about 12,000 of them made.
