Question Quick Question about lubricant on bushings

Will it do any harm if I spray some lubricant to the bushings?

Someone told me that spraying WD-40 will damage or crack the bushings. I don't know if that's true. It doesn't make sense to me. Is it true?

Or maybe some silicone lubricant??

I want to spray the left lower control arm bushings with some lubricant to see if that fixes the clunk/thump I get when going in reverse.

The dealer replaced the entire rack & pinion and tie rods; I still have the clunk/thump. It feels like if the wheel or something was loose. It doesn't do it all the time.

I've checked the entire area and everything seems fine.

What could it be?

I don't believe it will do any harm at all. My right rear shock snubber was creaking like crazy after my lowering springs went in so I soaked it with WD40....worked like a charm. The only thing is if you drive in rain at all I'm sure the WD40 will wash off in time.

I would say that wd40 is not going to harm the rubber gromets. Also, are you still running the stock exhaust or are you Modded now ?

Re: Quick Question about lubricant on bushings

WD 40 is only a temporary lubricant and I think it's not too kind to rubber (it soaks up water and will dry up the rubber if you apply it too often). I used to run a motorcycle with on o-ring type chain and was told not to use WD40 at all as it would cause the o-rings to eventually crack. I think 3 in 1 would be safer as a general lubricant for rubber, or preferably a high temp grease.

Re: Quick Question about lubricant on bushings

I had a 93 K10 full size Chevy Blazer and the hood release was a little rough to open. After playing with it awhile, I determined the cable needed a little lube. I remember at the time there was this Duralube Cr@p that was marketed at the time and I bought their general purpose lube and I sprayed some up the cable sheath at the Latch end under the hood. It worked fantastic and the release was nice and smooth....for about 3 days.

The lube worked its's way down the length of the cable into the passenger compartment and dripped out onto the floormat. Gets better, It actually broke down the plastic release handle and the handle just fell apart in my hand when I next opened the hood.

WD 40 has some tendencies to be damaging as well. I know most rubbers will swell when exposed to various lubricants. (please no dirty jokes now) Anyway,Vaselene petroleum jelly is excellent on rubber items and wont damage them. (I learned this from Scuba Diving and maintaining O rings, not at the sex toy store) Silicone spray is safe on rubber too, but wont last long.

I'm running Flowmasters Super 40 Series. Stock H-pipe with 2 cats removed. Sounds mean!

Re: Quick Question about lubricant on bushings

I went with Silicone Lubricant but I still have the front end pop.

I believe it has something to do with the lower control arms and bushings.

Let's see what the dealer says about it.

Thanks for all your post guys.

Yes, that's what I've been told.
But no one seems to know the TSB Number.

Do you have it?
Please, tell me you do!!

Re: Quick Question about lubricant on bushings

SSM 17100

2003-2004 Mustang - Front Suspension Noise

Some 2003-2004 Mustangs may exhibit a squeaking or crunching noise from the front suspension while driving over bumps or braking. This may be caused by the lower control arm bushings. To service, replace both lower control arms per workshop manual section 204-01. For LX vehicles, replace with XR3Z-3078-AA (Right Side) and XR3Z-3079-AA (Left Side). For GT vehicles, replace with XR3Z-3078-BA (Right Side) and XR3Z-3079-BA (Left Side). For Cobra/Mach vehicles, replace with 2R3Z-3078-AA (Right Side) and 2R3Z-3079-AA (Left Side). After replacing the control arms, check aligment and adjust if necessary. Verify that the noise is eliminated.

Symptom Code on Ford's OASIS is under 30400-Chassis Suspension System

Re: Quick Question about lubricant on bushings

Thank you VERY MUCH 2k4mach.

Today I called my dealer and the Tech Supervisor told me that there is a bulletin for the GT and V6, not for the Cobra/Mach.

Anyways he told me to take the car next week so he can take a look, I will DEFINITELY show him this bulletin because it says for Cobra/Mach also. And it also says the part number to be replaced with.

You're the man!
