Not your typical crank pulley question.
Hopefully I'll be able to afford to build a media blasting/ powder coating cabinet and oven this summer and I was looking at various parts on the engine to PC. The biggest eye sore is definitely the crank pulley. On closer inspection, I noticed what appeared to be a rubber gasket in the middle of the outer ring. Are these things two pieces? Would I be able to remove the gasket for sand blasting and baking, then reinstall? Any insight would be appreciated.

Well I think it would be easier if you just got some POR 15 and painted it.

It's all rusted and causing my K member below to rust. It needs to be taken off and sanded or blasted, so I might as well PC it while I have it off.

If you have an air compressor, you can get a cheap sandblaster for about $40. Its not fast, but plenty for small parts. Fine (44 grit) sand is about $4 per 100 lb bag at most tool rental centers.
Are you talking about the crank pulley, or harmonic balancer? Most harmonic balancers are two piece... inner ring & outter ring with a leather or rubber material between. Its just a way of helping the dampering effect... One the 4.6, the pulley and balancer might be the same piece.... I haven't looked. |

you cannot powder coat the crank pulley, because the rubber will
not withstand the heat, but you can blast it,just be sure to tape off the portion of the crank that goes past the crank seal, and after you've blasted it be sure to clean /remove the blasting media from between the the rubber ring and pulley,if you remove the rubber ring you will probably not be able to press it back together properly, this ring act as a dampner to isolate harmonics i have powder coated many parts for my mustangs,i find the best color that holds up and doesn't show dirt is silver sparkle with clear mixed in with the silver, this is extremly durable, holds up to even brake fluid!! you can powder coat anything that doesn't have seals,or seals that can be removed, this also includes bushings. hopes this helps. |

Boy oh boy: I was looking for this type thread. I try to keep my 03 motor looking brand new and it does...except for that rusty pulley! I mean, it really detracts from the entire engine appearance.
Question: how difficult is removal, and reinstall? Or, should I just buy a new one and paint it? Thanks for the thread...I thought I was the only one who doesn't like rusty exposed car parts. |
