Talking rearend installed!

I had my 4.10's, aluminum driveshaft, TA girdle and main bolt, 31 spline Superior axles, and Ford 31 spline traction lok installed today finally at LaRocca's Performance! in NJ. Install took about 4 hours, and that included them reflashing my computer for the speedo.

I will definitely say that this is the way it should have came from the factory! Like others, I was afraid that 1st would be a waste (it was on my 95 Cobra with 3.73's), but it really pulls there in 1st! 2nd-5th is awesome, and when in 5th and you hit the pedal, it gets up and goes now. Am really glad I moved on up to rebuilding the rear! I brought them 3 bottles of Redline 75/90 synthetic with friction modifier already added, and 3 bottles of 75/140 and a bottle of Ford Friction Modifier. They said to use the 75/90 with the modifier already installed. On the way home (3 hour drive), I did notice some whine coming from the rearend. I called them, they said give it a couple of days and if it doesn't go away, they will check it out when I go back up on the 15th. They said that with the 4.10's-4.56's, there is usually some noise associated with it? I know I don't like, thats for sure. Hopefully it will go away, if not, they will be opening back up the rear when I get there on the 15th. Wonder if changing to the 75/140 and adding modifier myself would cure the whine?

Anyhow, for those considering the gear change, I would definitely recommend it! The power band is so much more useable now...

I HAVE 4.30'S PUT IN MY MACH-1, IT HAS HAD THE WHINE FROM DAY ONE. IT STARTS ABOUT 40MPH, BY THE TIME I'M AT 80MPH, THE WHINE IS 3 TIMES AS LOUD. I HAD THEM INSTALLED AT A FORD DEALERSHIP, THE MECHANIC TOLD ME TO BRING THE CAR BACK AND HE WOULD TEST DRIVE IT. IS THIS NORMAL, I HAVE READ SOME THREADS THAT IF THE GEARS ARE INSTALLED CORRECTLY, THERE SHOULD BE NO WHINE...

At about 40 MPH is where mine starts as well. Reinstalling the lower spring isolators did not help. I have a feeling that LaRocca's is going to be tearing back apart mine when I go up there on the 15th so he can reflash my computer for the new tires.

On a worse note though, over the weekend I installed my new Illumina shocks and struts, and when I went to take off the rear wheels, it looks like they didn't use the proper socket on the air gun and destroyed my lugs, and scratched the inside of my rims up! Now not only do I have a whiny rear, but have to order new lugs to go with my new wheels which are due here this week (Wed). Now I am kinda afraid to have them go back into the rear as fear for my new rims. I think I will take the wheels off myself and put them back on. Another reason why you never use air guns with wheels!

I had 4.10's in my bullitt and thought that was a good gear for the 2v....and due to the fact that our cars have the 4v the 4.30's were the obvious choice for me. If your still wondering between 4.10's and 4.30's you can think of it like this...there is only a couple hundred rpm difference between the two.

Like jtack said, gear choice is a few hundred rpm's difference. For me, I drive my car mostly on the highway, so the 4.10's are perfect for me. Track time, maybe 10 times a year if that. If I were going to the track every weekend, I would have went 4.30's. However, I read that 4.30's were more noisy than 4.10's, but with the 4.10's, I definitely have a whine that starts at about 40 mph...

2000+ miles on 4.10's with no whine. It's a great gear for all around driving and really wakes the Mach up.

My car doesn't see hardly any highway time and i drive it about twice a week, whenever we can get a babysitter, and go rice huntin. I just don't want to fight wheel spin at the light while the stock celica goes on by. maybe i'm thinkin it'll be worse than what it'll actually be. I can't afford the sticky tires and axles and other things to hook. I'm dealin w/ stock tires here. Thanks for the advice so far, it is helpin! My dealer says there will be no whine they said they've done countless 4.10's and a couple 4.30's he said if it's whining then they were done wrong..?.?

After driving the car for the weekend, the whine between 40-55 mph is still there. I will change the diff. fluid tomorrow night to see if that makes a difference, and then if not, they are going to have tear back apart this thing and make it right!

On a side note, and not feeling too good about it...

I noticed on Saturday that when then used the impact (yes impact) gun on my rear wheels, they didn't use a impact socket so it chewed up my lugs pretty good. It also scrapped up one of the wheels at the lug opening pretty well. Short story, 45 for anew lug set, and a little bit of grey wheel paint and thats fixed for now (am about to install my 18" black bullitts this weekend).

I had them install my Steeda firewall adjuster and clutch quandrant, and after looking at it, they only installed 1 screw on the firewall adjuster and they now have my clutch cable sandwiched between the dipstick tube and engine block (not good). Will fix this tomorrow as well.

Will call them tomorrow to make sure they schedule enough time to tear apart the rear when I go up there on the 15th (not really looking forward to it, shoulda just paid my local shop who did my Cobra's rearend and saved the headache).

How many quarts of fluid does the rearend hold?

About 2.5 quarts. With a TA cover, it holds a little more than with the stock differential cover.

Well, changing the fluid had no effects on the whine. I called a local speed shop here yesterday, and he said that it definitely set up wrong. As others have noted, he said Ford gears do not whine and that they are 1 of the best gearsets on the market.

I spoke with LaRocca's about the problem, they don't have a full day that they can schedule me in there to fix the rear and retune on the dyno. I don't have 12 hours of my time to take it up there and leave it, then to come back and pick it up. Plus, since I supplied everything, they don't know if they are going to charge me even though I drove back the same day and said something was wrong? Anyhow, to make a long story short, the local shop is going to fix it, and the only thing I am out is the gearset. A buddy of mine who works for Ford took car of that! So, other than being highly frustrated at what I paid last Friday for my install (was $550 for install plus computer reflash, $50 for the bearings, and $50 for my offset rack bushings and firewall/clutch quandrant install), plus the time (3 hours up, 6 hours home due to the backup on the turnpike), I am done! Superior here in Maryland will take care of fixing it right.

Sorry to hear you had these problems.

A properly installed gearset will not make noise, unless there is something wrong with the gearset itself.

Jester had to replace his gearset after having it installed. I drove his car one night and it was clearly making a lot of noise that should not have been there.

He had the gearset replaced and last I heard everything is good.

do any of you guys have time slips before and after gear changes? the 4.30-4.10 question is one that i think all of us face. is it worth it to go with the 4.30's?

LaRocca's has been getting a bad rap lately... they are an hour and a half away from me and I've seen a few local guys having issues with them.

For those that have been following this thread about my troubles with my rearend buildup and the whine from the rear after it was done, I can officially say that my rear is whine free!

Superior here in MD took care of the problem today. Not only was the backlash set wrong, the shims were in backwards and the carrier was so tight in the pumpkin, that it took myself and Dave to get it out. Unbelievable! Anyhow, I replaced the gearset just for good measure, 2.5 bottles of Amsoil Series 2000 75/140, no friction modifier, and I can tell you that the only noise you can hear now is some tire noise! Dave and his helper were 1st class, and I have no problems recommending them over anyone else here.

I still have a minimal amount of whine even with the second new FRPP gearset. I had to have my carrier machined, as it was not completly flush with the ring gear. The whine is very tolerable to me. I'm using an 85w90 mineral based oil with Ford friction modifier in the rear per Pyle Bros warranty.

Who said they were installed backwards and where did I say that I recommended Pyle Bros??? The problem was with the carrier..... just re-read the post.

I am NOT recommending them! EVER! I was recommending changing to at least 4.10's. As for the aforementioned shop, if you want to use them, good luck is all I can say! I for one won't be...
