TR-3650 TSB out on April 30

The Tremec representative at the Mustang 40th Anniversary Celebration in Nashville said the details of the fix for the 1-2 shift problems have been worked out with Ford. A kit containing all necessary parts will be issued along with a sticker for the transmission to indicate the new fluid level of 3.2 L. The issue date for the TSB is April 30, 2004. Great !!!

Regarding 2004 models. Apparently they already have the "fix".

I hope you're right...while I almost apologize for saying it, this is the smoothest tranmission and shifter that I can recall in many new cars.

Yet this preoccupation with an ultra "short shifter" is imho a mistake unless one shifts deliberately/carefully. The synchros require a small amount of time to do their job...the wrong shifter and technique will produce wailing and, er, gnashing of teeth.

Hmmmm Thats funny. My tranny in the Mach acts just like the one that was in my 03 GT. I can't see where it was improved upon.

2004 3650 FLUID LEVEL

The owner's manual for my '04 says that the transmission should be filled to on half inch below the filler hole (3650). Does this represent 3.2 liters?

KEEPING MT FINGERS CROSSED

2,700 miles and no problems yet on my January 8, 2004 build date 2004. I'm not accumilating miles 1,320 feeet at a time and, like Medium Cool give the synchros a millisecond to work.

Did have the dealer change out the fluid ay 2,000 miles. When I saw Mercon V on the invoice, I had them put in plain Mercon (Dexron III).

2004 3650 fluid level, etc

My 2003 Mustang owner's guide states the fluid level should be 1/2" below the edge of the filler hole as per post of STG on 4/24. However, the maintenance and specifications section of the manual on page 201 state the capacity is 3.8 L. Therefore, either the manual was not updated, or the revision to 3.2 L came out after the 2004's were in production. It appears the level of 1/2" is incorrect for a fill of 3.2L. (It should be greater.)

PS - I have e-mailed techical support at Tremec about the 3rd gear problem and to verify that the 2004 models do indeed have the revised parts. Will let you know when I hear from them.

1-2 grind, 04 mach

Yellowbird, are you sure its only a 03 fix, ive had mine changed three months ago and it still has the slight grind to second and now its warming up here in New Orleans and its getting better, but only because its not cold anymore. I seem to doubt that the 04 have already got this fix, every other 03 problem i got on my 04 appears to never been fixed during orginal manufacturing, i sure hope youre wrong. my dealership wont fix mine unless it applies to the 04, if its only for a 03 they say they have to wait for the 04 bulliten to come out. Iam bringing the squeaky shaker in tomorrow to get fixed with the kit. that also was a 03 problem. They wont fix the seat rub no bulliten yet for 04.

Thanks

Question HUH?

Eric,

Am I reading your post correctly? Your seat rubs, but your dealer won't fix it because there's no TSB on it?

THAT'S NUTS!

Is your dealer telling you that they will only fix warranty problems that have a TSB? If so, no warranty repairs would ever be made without a TSB and therefore, no warranty repairs would EVER be done.

Either your seat rubs or it doesn't. If it does, Ford needs to fix it. I would contact the owner of the dealership and tell him that, as a courtesy to HIM, you made the effort to get in touch before going directly to Ford.

Maybe you need to find another dealer.

Awsome, about time Ford came out with a tsb for the tranny, now if they can only figure out why my mach keeps dying out when I come to a stop or driving down the freeway

Tremec response

The responses from Tremec regarding the 2003, 2004 models, and the 3rd gear problem are listed below.

Does this TSB apply only to the 2003 Mach 1?

It will be for all cars still under warranty that have not been modified by the owner and will include the 2003 Mach 1.

Did I understand you to say that the 2004 Mach 1's already have the new/revised parts installed?

Yes, the parts that are in the upgrade kit are in the new transmissions for 2004.

Will the kit also include any parts for the 3rd gear problem that some people have mentioned?

Yes, it will address the parts for the 1-2 nibble and the 2-3 clash.

I hope they still apply to the '04 Mach's... maybe they meant the TERMEC's that are being made IN 2004 (probably used in other cars than the Mach and Mustang) has the fix... maybe the '04 Mach has the '03 Tranny?? I have an '04 Mach and my 1-2 grind is TERRIBLE!

Re: Re: Tremec response

Who are you contacting at tremec? Could you either give me their contact or see what they say about '04 Mach's having the same issue?

edit: nevermind, already went to their website and I sent them an e-mail about it.. I'll post anything I get from them...

Well today is the 30th. Let me guess another TSB date gone by with nothing to show. I hope we see one soon, but I am not banking on it.

I had my service manager check this morning and as of 10am (EDT), he could not find the TSB. He was going to check later in the day, but today is Friday. Will check again on Monday.

WHAT TREMEC TOLD ME

I e-mailed and later phoned Tremec to find out a few things for my self.

I was concerned with the correct fluid and amount to use in my 2004 Mach1 and to find out once and for all if 2004s are prone to the 1-2 grind.

Here's the e-mail response:

The correct fluid is the Mercon/Dexron III product, we use the GM
Synchromesh where there are only brass rings involved. The correct fluid
level is 3.2L.

Since your car was built in Jan-04, you will not need the update for the
1-2 shift.

Jon A. Vieth
Product Line Manager

Later, I spoke with Jon and he could not confirm just how far below the filler hole 3.2 liters is (is it 1/2 inch, like my 2004 owner's manual states?). He stated that all Tremec 3650s present in 2004 Mach1s have the updated parts that will be specified in the upcoming TSB.

He also stated that the 3650s seem to need about 5000 miles before they're broken in and smooth out.

Note what Jon said about GM Syncromesh fluid. I've seen it recommended in several places, but the 3650 doesn't have any brass rings. The correct stuff is Mercon/Dexron III.
