T56 magnum swap

Looking hard into doing a t56 magnum swap. Those of you that did it, how much was everything when all said and done including clutch, driveshaft, crossmember, ect. Was it worth it? Do you have close or wide ratio? Want to go built motor/ blown in the future and trans is giving me problems now so trying to figure everything out. Please read post #18 for latest question
Thanks,
Dan

Re: T56 magnum swap

It's definitely an expensive sway. I got everything through MM&FF when i did mine, but I wont have another H-pattern stick car without a Magnum. If you're going to keep it a stick, there is no other option IMO.

Re: T56 magnum swap

I did the T56 Magnum swap about 3 1/2 years ago, they advertise it to being the smoothest shifting tranny on the planet and it is..... I got mine as a complete swap from Joe at D&D Performance in Mich. It included the Transmission, Aluminum Drive shaft, Bell Housing, rear Cross member, and the reverse inhibitor electrical plug. I went with the 2.97 first gear. I've run it hard at the track, and launched it hard with no issues what so ever. It's a little pricey but well worth the investment if you're dealing with missed shifts and 2nd-3rd lockout at high RPM shifts.

Ray....

I paid about $2400 for everything shipped. Bought it off a guy on SVTP about 3 years ago.

I guess I will be the downer in this. I hated it...to the point of driving was no fun for me. Granted I have a higher horsepower car than most and going to the track and racing was annoying.

Re: T56 magnum swap

this is one of those wish list items...I have never liked my 3650. It shifts like the first 3550 Tremec's did when they came out for our Foxes...

the tko I had in my fox shifted nicer, and it was a rock crusher...

Best shifting trans I ever had was the z-code t-5......

anyway...the t-56 is on the list..just need 5k to put it all together

how much power? i have one behind a 740hp NA sbf and it shifts great. Was something wrong with your combo? firewall flex? clutch ballooning?

yeah...one rst clutch smoked after 5 runs...glazed the clutch. RXT worked good for sure...but I wasnt enjoying my car with that trans in it.
full man auto improved my driving experience to say the least...

I"ll have to agree with this. Although my T56 was not a Magnum and had a 2.66 1st, it was great on the street but awful on the strip. I went to it after rebuilding my 3650 4 times until I twisted the input shaft. I'm now running a 4R70W overdrive auto and love it, except coming down the canyons.

Re: T56 magnum swap

Can anyone validate the info i found below as far as what all is needed to swap from the 3650 to the t56 magnum?

You will need the following:

1. T56 Magnum..either the close ratio version 2.66 1st .63 6th or the wide ratio which has a 2.97 1st and a .50 6th

2. Bell Housing. An alulminum one runs as much as a QuickTime Steel bell so go QuickTime (plus, it's SFI rated)

3. New clutch disc. Assuming your pressure plate and flywheel are in good shape, then all you need is a 26 spline clutch disc. The 3650 has a 10 spline input, the Magnum is 26.

4. Modify your cross member. If you have a GT all you have to do is slide your current cross member rearward in the slotted mounts to pickup the tail housing of the magnum. If you have a Cobra, you will need to modify it slightly.

5. Shorten your current driveshaft 2".

6. The bolt pattern on the shifter for the 3650 is metric where the Magnum uses 3/8" bolts. You can either buy a new shifter handle or drill out the bolt holes on your factory handle to 3/8" and call it done.

That's basically all you need. All your wiring from the 3650 harness will transfer straight over to the Magnum. The slip yoke on your driveshaft will fit the output shaft of the Magnum but like I said above, you will have to have the D/S shortened 2".

Re: T56 magnum swap

When I pick one up, it'll be with the 2.66 1st, but the .50 6th.

Re: T56 magnum swap

I went with a Gforce T56 w/2.66 1st.
26spline input shaft w/Spec Stage 3 clutch
Pro5.0 shifter with factory handle
Cobra driveshaft with Steeda spacer.
QuickTime bellhousing
4.10 gears
Approx 640rwhp
Procharged

We don't drive the car on the street too often. But when we do, it's very easy to drive...and fun. Even just putzing down the road.

Re: T56 magnum swap

School me on the different ratio choices. I have 4.30s and the stock 3650 and my weapon of choice is N2O with 28" tires. NA 26" tires.

1st - 3.38; 2nd - 2.00; 3rd - 1.32; 4th - 1.00; 5th - 0.62

T56:
2.66, 1.78, 1.30, 1.00 .80, .63

2.97, 2.10, 1.46, 1.00, .74, .50

I would think the 2.66 1st gear becomes a little more usable. But I'm not a drag race guy.
I use 4.10s with the 2.66 and I can use 1st gear with care. When I had the 3650 in there, 1st gear was useless.

With the 4.30s and a nitrous launch, first gear goes really quick. Even on the street I can take off from a dead stop in 2nd gear.
