Jon Kaase's EMC build detailed in the March Popular Hot Rodding

The article is quite detailed so those wondering what went into this build will find it quite informative. However, I'm only able to post the first page (as to not hurt magazine sales) so to learn more you'll have to buy the issue when it comes out in a couple weeks.

What's the deal with 8 primaries per side?

Jon saw a Buell with that setup and thought he'd try it out...it helped scavenging quite a bit. With the amount of overlap he was running the headers needed to scavenge and these worked the best.

I want a set of those coming out the sides of my modular powered Factory Five Cobra replica! Would definitely get the attention of the traditional V8-powered guys...

Can't wait for the issue.

What is neat about the 3 mod motors entered all used stock Ford heads and stock Ford Blocks. I only saw 2 other engines with factory parts the gen 3 hemi and Ls motor with Ls7 heads.
No wonder my Mach runs like a bat out of hell

Also the top 1st and second place had production Ford intakes. No other engine ran a production intake manifold.

you can run a distributor like that to help with spark issues..it was built for an engine competition, making it fit in a car wasnt really a concern

Oh ok..I guess I am just too practical since I was looking at it from a "Will that fit in my Mach"? aspect..makes sense it is on a stand... would like to shoehorn it into a beat up '79 F100 and go to Oklahoma and get me some "Farm truck"!!

Forget the distributor....Those headers would be a nightmare to fit in anything much less a mach.

The lowers are going for abround $900. Most of the uppers are around $2k. Jon said he got a deal on his and wouldn't say what he paid.

block $4k
bb sleeves $1.5k
heads $2k
cams $1.3k
crank $4k

then there are the rods, pistons, injection, followers, valves, lash adjusters, cam drive parts, headers, TB, upside down secondary tensioner, etc.

This is very true. However, the cost of building a big power LS isn't far behind.

I firmly believe one could get a 75% solution with an iron 5.4 and C heads. You can add 17ci by offset grinding the crank to 4.35 and using an LS rod with a honda journal diameter. You can even use a standard CD flat top piston with this setup. So, for less than $700 (rods, crank grinding) you can grow the 330ci 5.4 to 348 (.020" overbore). With a .040" overbore it goes up to a 350.

An engine like this could easily make 500/450rw, that's 588/529 at the crank while not going above 7000. Long tubes are the only component that would be "custom" so the overall cost would be quite low, possibly even less than a BB/Stroker.

Just think, 348ci mod motor that doesn't require a custom rod or piston and the total cost of the rotating assembly is less than that of a 4.6 stroker...

I'd go hoodless if that was in the engine compartment.

Re: Jon Kaase's EMC build detailed in the March Popular Hot Rodding

Todd - what build design/detail do you think made the difference for the win for Kaase vs. Mihovetz? For the layman, the exhaust was obviously different. I'm sure in a competition like this all the details matter. Also can you give any details on the type/style and weight of the rods?

The difference came down to cam specs and cam timing. The headers did add some power down low but no a huge amount. There is one other trick that is explained in the article but I can't mention it right now. The rods were standard Eagle H beams, nothing special.
