Do i have to pull my engine to remove heads

I'm getting ready to remove my heads to fix my valve guide, port, and hopefully find a 98 cobra cam. I talked to my father inlaw, his a Ford mechanic, and he said I have to remove the engine and I have to have "special" tools. Has anyone removed there's?

I have to remove my heads also and have been told the same thing. Except for the "special" tools. I'm not really sure about that.

Special tools meaning an engine lift and torque wrenches? Not sure what else would be needed except common tools.

I was taking a look under the hood today and the heads dont look like they would be too hard to take off. Only thing I think would be a hassle is the stuff above and around it. Good question, would like to know as well, thinking of sticking some long tubes on there.

Re: Do i have to pull my engine to remove heads

He may be referring to the tools that the Ford Techs use when removing and installing heads on your engine. Those tools can be made with some cleverness.

You will WANT to pull or drop the engine. It truly is the way to go. Working on an engine that is on a stand is a DREAM in comparison to doing the work in the engine bay.

Removing and replacing the heads is a lot of work, no matter how you look a it...

Pulling the engine would be the easy part of the job IMO. I wouldn't do it any other way. In reality there isn't a whole lot to pulling the engine out. Engine stand FTW

I pulled mine out to do the heads if you can drop the k member, do it vs pulling it out way easier I learned the hard way when I first bought the car.

He wants to help, that's y I was asking. He's in Ashland ne, 4 hours north. He wants me to leave the car there because he's got all the stuff to do it. But if I did it here Im sure I could find other things to do to her. Sounds like ill have to leave her.

Re: Do i have to pull my engine to remove heads

I pulled my heads off with the motor still in the car twice. Yes its possible and you dont need "special" tools or anything crazy. but it is a pain in the ***. Its much easier to pull/drop the motor.

But it is possible... I'll have the time to fight it. Sounds like I'm looking at a couple months to get the heads done, which sucks. I can't find anywhere that's got a set done that I can just buy.
