Cobra Jet?? Emblems

I know we have discussed the use of the Cobra Jet emblems on the Shaker in the past. I have since put them on mine and they look great!! They really stand out on a Black Mach.

I was wondering, how many of us are now running the Cobra Jet emblems on the shaker scoop?

Re: Cobra Jet??

I bought mine back in '08 and didn't get to put them on till a few months later. When I did, the glue on the emblems stopped sticking, so they've sat in my glove box ever since! lol

Did you get the Ford metal emblems?? They usually stick with no problem, as long as you clean the area good with rubbing alcohol. I have heard of problems with the plastic ones staying on.

Re: Cobra Jet??

We've had them on our Mach since '08. They're still hanging on. It depends on where you put them on the scoop that makes them looks right though.

Re: Cobra Jet??

I don't think there's any real good reason for it other than it is a shaker scoop on a Mach 1. It was a shout back to honor the original 428 Cobra Jet motor of which some were R code cars and the R code signified a 428 with a shaker scoop in the '69/'70 Mach 1 Cobra Jets. The non shaker Q code cars were still 428 Cobra Jets.

Re: Cobra Jet??

I can't fain fake, I just can't do it. CJ emblems, although I understand the appeal, it just reeks of being fake.

My 2 cents.

Re: Cobra Jet??

My NOS emblems are still sitting n a display case waiting for a good home. They were bought for my '69 Cobra Jet Grande', which was later sold. I kept them and had planned on putting on the Mach 1. Now that everyone else has them on their cars, I decided to be different and not do it. It's like louvers and spoilers and Magnums on '69 and '70 Mach 1s, nice but not correct.

Re: Cobra Jet??

Yes, been discuss many, many times, some people have them some don't. If you do a search on Cobra Jet Emblems. Its' all personal preference.

The "R" in our VIN was brought back with a little help from Scott Hoag while at Ford with the codes from the older Mustangs that had the "R" in the VIN meaning 428 4V CJ Ram Air.

There is even a POLL/SURVEY about the emblems.

Have them and love them, no more fake than the side scoops that came from Ford.

This is a re-post. Read and decide

Cobra Jet Shaker Emblems on 03/04 Mach 1 ??

Hint: 69/70 R code Mach 1's had the "CobraJet" emblem on the shaker while the 70 Boss 302 with a shaker was 'blank'. "Heritage" tells us--Mach 1 with shaker = CobraJet. The name CobraJet was a marketing tool by Ford. And yes, a 72/73 Mustang with the 351 engine had the name "Cobrajet" so small blocks carried the name.

Now--why no Cobrajet emblem on the 03/04 mach’s. 2 main reasons per Scott Hoag and Team Mustang: Cost--added cost to the car-not only during the original build-inventory to carry and have ready on 'the line' but a part that must be carried in Ford's inventory for some 7 years after production..plus future warranty claims if they come lose.....too many $$ involved--note Ford dropped the painted cam covers of the 03 in 04 to save pennies. And #2--the name--"Cobrajet" uses the term "Cobra" and John Colletti has a big hissy fit if anyone outside of SVT uses the name Cobra. Scott Hoag lobbied for the emblem but quickly learned it was a losing battle ...On more than one occasion he has said he feels perfectly fine with folks installing them post purchase (see Hoag thread on the Registry).

Now--what about 'big power' the emblem stands for--YOU BET. Your little ol' 281 as delivered from the factory puts out more HP then the original 69/70 428 CJ. The 69/70 428 engines (as factory built and tuned) were rated at 335 hp but in reality put out about 375-395 Gross hp at the crank.

NOW-A VERY IMPORTNAT concept here that ALL the magazines miss in trying to compare current cars to the original Muscle car era. In 1972 the standards involved in rating an engine at the crank changed from SAE GROSS to SAE NET. There is no magic conversion factor--NET figures include all engine accessories and the exhaust system (which vary from car to car) while GROSS measures pure engine power with nothing else connected and with open exhaust-but for guesswork SAE estimates at least a 20% difference between Gross and Net.

As for the 03/04 Mach 1...it rates 305 NET but in reality is actually about 325-330 (6800 rpm stick version). In terms of the old measuring standard this equals at least 410 SAE GROSS HP at the crank (410 gross minus 20% or 82 comes to 328hp net). And 410 Gross is higher than 395 Gross.

Yes the 69/70 428 can be retuned, new cam, new carb etc to greatly increase HP but so can the current 281 via computer chip.

Coming off the showroom floor the standard 69/70 R code Mach 1 with the 3.50 traction lock rear-end was good for about 13.6 in the 1/4 mile--current 03/04 mach 1's are good for 13.1 (good tracks with very good drivers). Difference is not just engine but also includes tire and modern suspension improvements.

Thus the 03/04 puts out more HP and is quicker----more than enough qualifications to call it a "Cobrajet". Now, many 69/70 Mach 1 owners get very bent over the newer cars carrying the emblem...too f'n bad. My club has such a member--he is proud of his 'stock' 69 Mach 1--can't blame him a bit-I would be too (mine decreases in value daily-while his increases). Every time he complains about my small block having a Cobrajet emblem I make the same challenge--he brings his 69 Mach and pink slip, I'll bring my 04 Mach and a bank check for my loan balance and winner take all in a drag shoot out. He always makes a wise crack and then walks away--he is not stupid, bent yes, but he has read the mag reviews and has seen modern Machs at the drag strip and his stock 69 428 wants no part of a 03/04 Mach with big money on the line.

Re: Cobra Jet?? Emblems

It's still a no go for me, but I appreciate and understand the logic.

My logic is this, there is a steep connection the whole 70s' CJ nomenclature and this is an area where I'm really clear what I will and what I won't add to my Mach 1, it's just too big of a reach, it's not Cobra Jet, if Ford wanted it to be, they could of just listed the engine in a book as a "Cobra Jet" with no cost to them at all. Just a word in a marketing ad or in a work manual and offer the emblems as an aftermarket part (now their making money and not having to worry about the parts falling off). They didn't do that though.

Now if there are people that want to put in on there cars and they thinks it's look cool, then party on.

Re: Cobra Jet?? Emblems

And remember, Ford did re-introduce the Cobra Jet name on factory built drag cars in 2008. The 5.4 DOHC engine, with or without a blower will be replaced this year with a 5.0 Coyote based Cobra Jet in their run of the factory built 1/4 demons.
And the car my emblems were meant for was 428 Cobra Jet, but with no shaker. It was Q-code 428 equipped with a non-functional, non-ram air scoop.

Your engine isn't too small, but the lack of a shaker scoop to mount them on could be problematic.
