Angry Hydroboost leaking under dash!

Anyone have their brakebooster leaking powersteering fluid uner the dash on them yet. Ive only got little under 50,000 miles on an 04 and its already leaking. Noticed it yesterday while cleaning her up. Since I dont drive it much anymore Im not sure when it started leaking. You can watch it when you hit the brakes about a drop comes out every time you release the brakes.

Anyone have any advice on fixing this. I imagine Ive got to take it all apart to reseal it which totally sucks. Isnt this a bit rare to be leaking already? Im so PO'd about this. Theres no way of doing this without makeing a huge mess everywhere.

Just a thought. Does not driving it much cause the seals to possibly dry up some making them prone to leaking? I would go about 1 month at a time not driving it then would drive it for about a week.

Re: Hydroboost leaking under dash!

Old thread but I'm having the same issue. Do I repair or replace it?

Re: Hydroboost leaking under dash!

I have about 26,000 miles on my 2003 Mach1 and my hydroboost unit recently developed a power steering fluid leak. I was preparing to replace the unit with a new one but luckily discovered that the 7/8" bolt on the side of it, which is easily accessible thankfully, was loose. I threw an end wrench on that bolt and gave it almost half a turn. To my surprise and delight, the fluid leak immediately stopped after the bolt tightened up.

Those with a similar leak might want to check this bolt before doing anything else.

Re: Hydroboost leaking under dash!

My booster is also leaking power steering fluid. Looks like from the top left (looking at from front) bolt is seeping fluid. I used a flash light and looks like a small crack on the ear of the booster that attaches to the firewall. I'll try to tighten it up and see what happens. If there is a crack it may not stop it. Sucks I have never touched that thing. I have some PC Cam covers that haven't gone on because of it. They may go on now!

Has anyone found a crack?

Re: Hydroboost leaking under dash!

Well took into the dealer. Sure enough needed a new booster. $800 later wow! what a difference. I steering and brake feel must tighter. Sucks to spend the funds but what a difference.

It didn't turn off my ABS light. So I picked up a used ABS module and swapped it out my self (2 hrs). Easily done with out disconnecting any fluid lines. just drop the bracket by 5 bolts. tools needed swivel, extensions and small hands.

Re: Hydroboost leaking under dash!

My brake pedal has been rock hard for years since removing the cooler line to make room for the ProCharger intercooler... Apparently something happened to my hydroboost because I now notice its leaking under the car, but behind the firewall. I was told to replace the unit, looks to be about $200.

Re: Hydroboost leaking under dash!

Dang, after 130,000 miles I shall knock on wood AND I am about to hook up a PS cooler after as well getting rid of tube. If you don't SEE any fluid leak/drip anywhere but your level goes down after awhile, where would it be going and precisely from where?? Also I noticed since P1 install, I still have a decent brake pedal but on spirited stopping ABS seems to want to kick in more than it used to in the past. Possible or just older age creeping up??

Are you talking Power Steering or brake fluid leak? In any case if no drips are seen, I'd look for damp areas or areas where dirt/grime is building up.

My first thought on the ABS activating more would be loss of grip. How old are the tires? The ABS should only activate if it senses a wheel(s) locking up.

Tires have about 5K on them (Nitto N555-275/40 17).I was talking about power steering fluid. Thanks bris!!
