I'll admit it, I'm an exhaust noob
My first car was a 2000 6 cyl. mustang, with a full exhaust already installed so I really have no clue what all I need to do to my new Mach. I'm confident I want Flowmaster 40 series mufflers, and some long tube headers, other than that I really don't know what else I need.
Over on Flowmaster's website, they have the mufflers, then they have the exhaust kits, can anybody take the time and explain to me what all the kit consists of, if I just get the mufflers, what other stuff I have to have, and if I would just be better off buying the exhaust kit. I am assuming I need headers, x or h pipe, and the flowmaster catback kit. Thanks in advance for any info. |

Re: I'll admit it, I'm an exhaust noob
You have three major parts in an exhaust system.
1. Manifold/Headers - This is the part that is bolted directly to your engine 2. Mid-pipe - This carries the exhaust from the Manifold/headers to the last piece of your system. Usually this is piece is designed in three different fashions; X-pipe, H-pipe, and Prochamber, personal preference comes in here. Some say there is a difference, others not. This is also where you need to decide if you want to be street legal with it or not, hence catted(on road, legal) or off road pipe(not street legal). 3. Cat-Back - This is from your mid-pipe to your exhaust tips. Many brands, shapes, sizes, finishes, styles, and ways to do this. Flowmasters as you mentioned is a very popular streamline system. But there are other companies that make a better product that dont need to be welded in (IMO) such as SSS(PM John and Renae for Mach 1 Registry discount) Bassani, MAC, the list goes on. Some companies such as flowmaster and magnaflow will sell "weld ins" which use your existing pipe (or if you buy/make another set of pipes) and can be cheaper if you have the ability to do this or have pre-bent pipe available for your car. IMO your better off buying the kit whole. Do some research to be sure you get a kit that is known to fit well. When you buy your parts, since Machs are not very popular this is what you look for. Several websites that I have seen to not list the Mach1 on any of their products. Manifold/Header gaskets - 03/04 Cobra, Mach1 HEADERS - 03/04 Cobra / Mach1 MIDPIPE - 99-04 GT, Mach1, Billet CATBACK - 99-04 GT, Mach1, Billet Hope this helps and wasnt too much info!

PS
The exhaust soundclips thread is a good way to figure out which way you want to go... found here: http://www.mach1registry.org/forums/...ad.php?t=48861

Re: I'll admit it, I'm an exhaust noob
Absolutely! Great job on that!
The only thing I can think of is with regard to headers, if you get shorty or long tube, you'll need a matching mid-pipe to fit. Same goes for if you keep the stock manifolds, you can't get a midpipe for long tubes and expect it to fit with the stock manifolds, etc. Also, "billet" above in your post should read, "Buiiltt".

Re: I'll admit it, I'm an exhaust noob
If you like the sound of Flowmaster check out MAC.
They make long tube headers, matching H pipe, and their catback. Long tubes make good power and don't bother with any shortie headers. Also, keep in mind long tubes are a professional or /very experinced do it yourselfer job on the Mach. Best bet would be to start off with a catback and then decide if you want to bite the bullet and buy long tubes and pay for install. If not just buy an off road h pipe and you should be fine. ( I started this route and bought a used h pipe for $75 and installed myself. I later bought long tubes) Just my 2 cents....

Re: I'll admit it, I'm an exhaust noob
Preciate it guys. Yeah I definitely will have to pay for somebody to install this stuff, I can't do any of it. I'm good at cleaning inside and out, and the basic maintenance stuff, but definitely have no clue about doing mechanical work.

Re: I'll admit it, I'm an exhaust noob
Now where might be some good places to buy the exhaust parts at? I live in a pretty small town, highly doubt anybody around here could order the stuff for me any cheaper than I could order it and just get it sent to my house.

MIDPIPE's for Cobra's are the same as GT's, Mach's, and Bullits.
