car wont stay still!!

While im on the highway the car sways side to side sometimes and its hard to keep it in the lane. and theres a good inch of play in the steering wheel before anything happens. I've never had this problem before the car was running again.

I thought maybe it was the alignment so i got a free one from a friend. but it still does it. maybe the rag joint in the steering shaft? idk. any ideas.

Make sure the steering shaft is tight on the rack

Mine does that too. I'm at 99xxx miles so I'm assuming it's just a wore out rack.

Re: car wont stay still!!

If you can jack it up, try to turn the tires by hand - wiggle them back and forth and watch for areas of slop. Of course, use jack stands and be safe.

Re: car wont stay still!!

Mine did the same, i had my rack and pinion replaced and now its normal. I did the outter tie end rods and ball joints at the same time. Just be careful i heard bad inner tie end rods can eventually make your wheel fly off lol not sure though.

Re: car wont stay still!!

Look under the rear of the car and check your bushings on the upper control arms, diff carrier, and the lower control arms. This will make the car sway. I just changed mine and every thing is nice and tight. If it sways during acceleration, then corrects itself when you release the throttle, then this is your problem.
