What do you think helicopters do best????
I've been a helicopter pilot for a looooooooooong time and have always been amazed at how much utility they provide.
Attack, transport, recon, medevac, VIP trans, and even exploration. They get more reliable, faster, powerful, sexy, lethal, and expensive everyday. They're a lot easier to fly now too. My business is training NEW Army aviators and you have to keep them engaged and challenged. I think we may have stumbled on a new method for getting them to hover more precisely and smooth out their control touch. Keep in mind that hovering can't be done by wiggling a stick around --- you have to think ahead and just use pressure. I teach new guys to use the antitorque pedals first while I maintain control using the cyclic and collective. When they catch on I add the collective, next comes the cyclic, and then we start combining controls. When we get to the cyclic I demo a stabilized hover while I make circles and diagonal movements with the cyclic that keeps it in motion about 6 inches from center. Then I hover using pressure which looks like the stick ain't moving. I let them pick which method they want to master but most students progress from wiggling the stick to using pressure in a few hours. OK, now you see that talking about flying is not as exciting as doing it. Go to my next post to see a way to make it a fun challenge.

Re: What do you think helicopters do best????
I was a UH-1 (N & F) model crewchief in the USAF during the 1980's. I loved those old birds. I got some sticktime. Also tried to hover. Never really did well at that. I really admire a pilot that could hold a Huey steady. Our detachment used to wear t-shirts off duty that said: "If it doesn't hover, it sucks!" Used to really tick off the F-111 c/chiefs. LOL Ah, the good ole days.

Re: What do you think helicopters do best????
This show pilot was an instructor with me at Fort Rucker back in the mid 90's. Roger Buis, pronounced bias.
They do a show for kids that has become very popular. There are several helicopters that can actually do aerobatics but Otto cannot, the 300C is much harder to fly than the current batch of military helicopters. He does some fun things with the it that the kids love. Enjoy this long vid, if you want to jump ahead: 6:45 YoYo 9:15 Barrel racing 1100 bubblegum robber 1310 Banner tug (backwards)

Re: What do you think helicopters do best????
You always hear how much more expensive things are in the government. Now I know why they charge so much for a bottle opener! That's some great flying right there. You've got a cool job.
