We do this for Escapes all the time
Ford cabin filter = $18
Furnace filter = $2.50 ($10 that makes 4 filters).

If you get a good filter, it works much better than the Ford filter too.
You could cut up a vacuume cleaner filter possibly. I've seen a humidifier one that would work pretty well.
