Project Nasty is about to begin......

Just need some advice from some fellow Macher's who are older and wiser than me as far as this sorta thing goes. I am looking at building up a nasty little heads/cams setup. A friend of mine has been working on cars for a long time, and use to port cylinder heads for some nasty little 9-10 second cars. We are gonna buy a set of extra OEM heads and port them, and get some SHM cams. Just a few questions for you guys that have done this sort of thing in the past.

Will I save much money buying OEM heads and porting them with the help of my friend?

Will the gains be as good?

Anything else I should/must do with this heads/cams swap?

Would the SHM cams be a good choice for some ported heads? Stage 1 or 2? Or should I go with some Crower's or Comp Cams?

Thanks for all your help guys and gals.

I'm not a professional here, but I would think that porting a set of stock heads would be cheaper than porting a set of FR500 heads

Are you going to be doing a valve job as well?

You might also want to port your intake to match if you port your heads, and as far as cams I'd go with SHM. The stage of cam depends on you. Just my .02 though.

Also, in case somebody in here with some real expertise on the subject can help out. Wouldn't it be better to spend the money for H/C/I on a Bigbore block? I would think you would get better gains out of this for about the same money invested.

Why not just order the SHM heads with the cam that you want? You'll be dollars ahead of just buying another set of heads, doing the porting, and getting the cams. I know alot of times we keep oem parts around, thinking that we'll just put them back on the car, if we sell it. The problem with keeping the stock heads around is that the engine is unique enough that you probably won't be able to use the extra heads on anything else...

Just something to think about...

Is porting your stock heads not an option? That would seem to be the least expensive route...
Nothing to say on cams, no experience with them.

Hmmmm I didnt want to port my stock heads because I would be without a car for a while, but now that I think about it I can just buy a beater. I kinda need one anyways. Hmmmmm and SHM heads sound nice too. Ohhhhh the decisions! :HOPPY:

Well what I am looking at so far is this.......

Stage 1 4V 2003 + Cobra/Mach heads (part # 2055)
$1995 with exchange.
http://www.seanhylandmotorsport.com/...products_id=93

Stage 1 4V DOHC Billet Camshafts ( part #2710-B)
Stage 1 Lift intake/0.452 exhaust/0.452 Duration intake/209 exhaust/209 Mild cam, good mid-range power. $1095
http://www.seanhylandmotorsport.com/...roducts_id=128

So I am looking around $3350 after taxes. Not including install........which I am sure is NOT going to be cheap.

I have a spare set of 01 cobra heads that I might part with. They have one broken cam hold down (actually the webbing between the hold downs) but it really shouldn't matter and definitely won't if you use them as cores or swap them out for yours after porting. Let me know if you're interested. I bought them with the plan of building a new engine but it looks like the funds are going to be a long time coming.
