4.10 Gears, Installation Cost?

I see the 4.10 gears listed at 169.99-179.99. What is an average cost of having them installed?

Will Ford do it and will the car still be covered under the Factory and ESP warranties?

At my dealership, they will not do it, simply because of the liability. We sell Ford Racing parts, but the service dept. will not install any of it because we got burned a few years ago when a warranty situation occurred. Most of the mechanics will do it as a side job, though.

The warranty problem comes into play only if the problem is associated to the change. If you put 4.10s in the rear and you bring the car to the dealership because of rear end noise, you will probably not be covered. However, if the power seats quit working, that shouldn't be a problem.

Different dealerships may have different poicies. It may be best to check with your dealership.

That makes sense. What is an average charge for installing gears?

if you have it done right(I suggest a mustang or speed shop that has been around for awhile) it should cost $250-300, if it is done right they will stand by their work and you shouldn't have any problems

Gene Evans Ford has genuine Ford 4.10 gears for $139.95.
I bought them and am having them put in my '99 Cobra.
I am paying $275 to have them installed and I think
the Cobra requires more labor (to remove the Differential).
The link for Gen Evans Ford is :www.gefracing.com.

trade off

What is the trade off for the higher gear ratio? is it faster acceleration, but lower top end?

These cars will still top end over 140 mph with 4.10's.
Gas mileage will drop appx 2 MPG as well. Driveabilty
should be even better.

If you install the 4:10 gears you will only be effecting the differential part of your warranty. Even the Ford gears don't have a warranty as they are sold as "racing parts" and have no warranty.

The average cost of 4:10's are about 180.00 plus shipping it takes about three hours to install them, I would use nothing but Ford Motorsport Gears, and if the gears are installed by a competent Ford technician using the Rotunda tool or equivalent there is no reason to have rearend noise if you do 90% of the time they are not set up, right I have done hundreds, and have never had this problem, but if you do change gears, the Speedo has to be corrected, and that can be done with a chip very easily, you can also turn off the rear 02's if you run the OR H pipe as I just installed for Paul in his 03, I am sold on 4:10, s

Thanks for the info. I talked to my service department manager and he said they would do it for me. He also stated almost word for word what realshelby stated.

Dennis, right now I am looking at mods that have very little effect on the factory warranty.

1. drive shaft
2. 4.10 gears
3. dallas speed cal
4. tri-ax shifter

Later, if I find I like going to the track, I will add more mods to gain more power.

1. exhaust
2. mam
3. fuel injectors
4. chip

I will keep an eye out for your posts and I am glad you have joined us. I have a lot to learn about preformance mods.

4.10 Gears are in! No additional noise or anything bad ..
just faster. In fact, after driving the car it feels perfectly
natural. People recommended 4.30 gears and I
thought 4.10s were steep emough. But after driving
a little more gear wouldn't hurt either.

Glad to hear it! What is the rpm at 70mph? That is the speed I travel the most.

MustangCop: Top Speed is really not effected. The car is goverened to not exceed around 145MPH. With the 4.10
gears it will still stop end in the 140's.

TomCat: Not sure of the RPMs At 70 MPH. I will check
it next time I am out. But I can tell you it dosen't feel
excessive. I ran the car up to about 90 and it wasn't
even breathing hard.

I was expecting the car to feel a little high-strung. It
really dosen't. I was orinally considering 3.73 gears.
People on the SVT boards told me not to waste my
money. They were right.

Thanks for the clarification on the speed limiter 03elanor.
I just checked RPM at 70 MPH is 2550 in 5th gear.
The nice thing is the car actually has
some acceleration capability in 5th gear now.

Merry Xmas to All!

Yes 2550 sounds nice. I might actually use it then
I keep finding myself going down the road in a lower gear even though it has the 3.55's you would think I would remember so I don't have to fill up quite so often but I like to pass.

I like the sound of that. I was scared it would be around 3000.

Tomcat,
You're first list of mods are great choices and a full exhaust and chip will be good also. I'd get a K&N filter for good measure. Removing the silencer is a debateable mod. Some evidence shows a little improvement, some testing shows anywhere from nothing to a decrease. As for fuel injectors, there is no need to upgrade those for the things you listed. You wouldn't change those unless you got into a major engine project which dramatically iimproved airflow in and out of the motor(power adders like nitrous, supercharger, etc. and possibly cam, intake, or head work or swap. Something where you actually needed more fuel. The stock injectors will go a long way beyond the mods you listed. By changing them with what you listed you'll just create potential driveability problems. The mass air meter may or may not help you. I would wait until a number of people have tested throttle bodies and maf's before I go changing them.

I think the best mods for these cars, in my opinion, would be:
-JBA shorty headers or long tube headers from many manufacturers(Bassani has some mid lengths coming out but they are only going to easily adapt to their x-pipe)
-catted or off-road x or h pipe(x=more raspy tone, h=more classic muscle car rumble)
-cat back exhaust
-K&N air filter
-3.73 or 4.10 gears(research the pluses and minuses of both)
-chip
-aftermarket shifter if you don't like stock
-synthetic oil, trans fluid, rear diff fluid
-if anyone ever adapts a cai to the current setup where the shaker attaches to the airbox.
-underdrive pulleys
-you can go more serious from there.

First of all changing inj is to req at all, nor the Maf, a K&N is ok just dont oil it, your biggest gain will be exchaust. I would not think about Shorties, go long tubes, you can also use underdrive puleys a good chip and 4:10 gears. this should put you at or over 300 RWHP. and yes it can invalidate your warranty.
