351 W hints, tips, etc.
Anyone have experience with Ford 351s? It's an '80s (not sure what year exactly) Windsor. Comes with 302 heads, but I'm not contracted to those (my boss offered to buy them, if I don't want them). I'm not sure what I want from it yet. FI would be neat, but I don't know much about the block and I don't need to add my own "speed hole". Kinda thinking individual carbs/throttle bodies would be fun, as well or instead. If you have any information, please help me out.

Re: 351 W hints, tips, etc.
Stock 351 blocks a much stronger than 302 blocks. So unless your going for mega power then don't worry about it. If they are true 302 heads they won't work on a 351w without modification. A 302 has 7/16 head bolts and a 351w uses a 1/2 head bolt. They make flanged sleeve to use a 351 head on a 302 but you'll need to drill out the hole to use a true 302 head on a 351. Most aftermarket 302/351 heads are drilled for 1/2 and they use the adapter on a 302. Cylinder heads are probably the most important thing on a 351w. A good running 351w needs a good head to reach it's full potential. What's good for a 302 will only be ok on a 351 do the extra cubic inch. They become even more important on a stroked setup. I personally like the Dart Pro 1 195cc heads. AFR would also be a good choice.
Fuel injection is nice but it gets hard to find a good intake for a stroker due to the air volume needs. TFS-R or Victor Jr would be my choice. Headers will also be important. Again the large cid require better flow. From my experience most people that are unhappy with a 351 have used a lot of 302 parts to build it up. Sure the bolt up, but they aren't really meant for the large engines.

Re: 351 W hints, tips, etc.
Just as an aside, my friend just built a mild 351w based 408 for his 88 GT. It is a pump gas, stock block with a mild hyd. roller cam combo that has already put down 380/440 on a Mustang dyno. As soon as they figure out why it breaks up starting at 4500 I will post up the final numbers.

Look for a later 351W from an F150 or Econoline van. I bought a complete 96 E250 service motor from my FRPP dealer for my build and it came with roller lifters and cam, plus complete fuel set up with 19lb injectors.
