Engine build question.

First and foremost, could i build my shortblock, capable of 500whp with roughly 4k$. Upon return from my deployment it looks like i had a bit more money then i expected, so along with my eaton swap i want to fully forge my bottom end.

Should i look into replacing my crank? (I have the MT with the factory forged crank)

Also for you boosted machs, what kind of rotsting assmebly's are you running? I did some shopping and basically came up with manley h-beams, manley rings and 3.552 bore manley pistons with sealed power rod bearings. Now i've realized i am not sure if i should get flat top notched pistons, or +17cc dished ones. What is best suitible for boosted applications? I feel i am way over head here

Thanks!

Re: Engine build question.

The stock crank will work. The cylinders will need to be bored so you'll need 3.572 pistons. Regarding the valve reliefs, they are only needed if the camshaft duration and lobe centers dictate them.

Re: Engine build question.

Awesome information, thank you for the feedback. If i get dished pistons i can run higher boost correct? Also what about rod bearings, as i am un familiar with what is considered "stout" for boosted applications what type of bearings should i look into?

any one else have any input? Basically my engine will be stock mach block, forged rods, and pistons. Plasmoly rings, and "good" rod bearings with the stock heads, and crank. I dont plan on doing more than 550rwhp so i think the stock block will hold.

Please lend me ideas!

Re: Engine build question.

At only 550 rwhp any bearing will work. Also, at that power level I would go no lower than 9.5:1 compression. Yes, lower compression will allow for more boost but it will also lower hp.

Ive decided on this piston/rod combo, however ive also looked at the flattop mahle's. If im using stock rod length, and stock crank, and stock cams, i wont need to get valve relieved pistons correct? However if my crank and cams change ill need valve reliefs? Im still slightly confused on this.

You only need reliefs if you install cams that have long duration that are installed on a low lobe center.

Re: Engine build question.

And what about that 11.1 :1 compression ratio? I feel like thats a very high compression ratio for boosted application? Id hate to drop this money in my car just to have something fail because the CR was too high.

Re: Engine build question.

The "shopping cart" doesn't show up. Flat tops result in a 10.4:1 ratio. You could get thicker head gaskets which would reduce the CR.

The set up is manley forged H beam rods, and mahle forged flattop pistons. I also had looked at some eagle forged h beams that were about 20$ cheaper. Which brand do you prefer?

Also how thick of head gaskets should I run? If stock is .030 then what about .051?
