Re: Screen in front of MAF sensor

Was looking thru my box of all my original Mach 1 parts and found this. When looking at my C & L setup, can't see how it would work plus original instructions doesn't say to swap over. Got a feeling this is mainly a stock piece, maybe with the way the stock CAI is designed it needs this, aftermarket, not so much.

That is a nice Screen you have there.

My Daughters boy friend pickup his Mach last week & is doing the same stalling thing & has the K&N air intake on it with no tune

I find it very interesting about this screen & after market air intakes, now I did take my screen out and had no issue of stalling but I do have a tune.

Re: Screen in front of MAF sensor

According to C&L, if I am not mistaken don't they sell a CAI that they say no tune needed, and one that does? When I setup my Bama tune with the free tunes, I think I checked off the CAI box.

now you make your choice... on my jlt intake it did not say to put a screen in...but i sandwiched it in..not that hard.. it fixed my hesitation on the freeway on windy days.. there is no way this screen can be a restriction on our small v8 na cars..

Re: Screen in front of MAF sensor

So is this something I can just make by using window screen and jamming it between the MAF housing and air filter tube? Or can I buy a 90 mm screen from a dealer?

Excellent illustration of how the MAF screen works!

I wouldn't think so. I believe they would do some testing to choose the right size of mesh openings. But, I like what the other dude did where he bought a 90mm screen from a Cobra for his 90mm MAF. Odds are Ford MAF screens are similar in design.

I was thinking about this and wondering if some of the newer aftermarket high-flow filters are designed to strain the airflow. Maybe that's why some don't experience problems others have when the MAF screen is removed..?

Yeah, they told me the screen isn't available to them from Ford. This may be my only option but I'm not sure if they're actually a good product or not, but it seems simple enough to make sense that it would work.

Re: Screen in front of MAF sensor

Anybody know a good source for these yet? I bought my mach with an MRT intake on it. The previous owner removed the screen and didn't reinstall it. I like to pop it in neutral and coast up to stop lights, and the stalling is preventing me from doing that. Can you use a MAF screen from a GT?

Hell, I don't see why not, if it is the same diameter, try it. As well, I solved my stalling issue with a new IAC, so some of these problems may not be a screen, when is the last time you cleaned or replaced your IAC and PCV?

Re: Screen in front of MAF sensor

Well, the problem started when I noticed the filter had actually came loose from my intake. I guess it had been like that since I bought it a few months ago. Once I reattached it, I started having this stalling issue. Leads me to believe it's probably the screen. The flow without the filter was probably fairly laminar.

My jlt rai has no screen and It's never stalled pressing on the pedal. Seems like the k&N intake owners are having this issue?

I never have had issues with my JLT next gen. I put the screen on for about a month and didn't notice any change for the good or bad, so I took it back out.

OP, the first thing I would do is clean the MAF. I would remove the intake piping and clean the inside as well. I bet it all has a coat of scum on it from the unfiltered air.

Re: Screen in front of MAF sensor

I don't have the JLT, I have the MRT. I found a couple references to this problem in the search with MRT intakes similar to K&N.

Also, the IAC should be cleaned since you had the air leak. It might have gotten cruddy too. The IAC is on the throttle body right near the opening. It faces the windshield.

Re: Screen in front of MAF sensor

I just have a hard time believing my MAF or IAC suddenly gummed up to the point of malfunctioning at the very same time I discovered my filter had been off, so I put it back on. It was functioning perfectly with the file off. That tells me the difference in airflow with the filter on is causing this common issue with the MAF readings when the screen is removed.

I'm thinking of trying a bit of window screen just as a test.

You could also try clocking (turning) the MAF housing because maybe with the filter, it is changing the airflow such that more is dumping around the sensor itself. The screen is supposed to help with this but mine did not change either way WITH the MAF in place. Loosen the connection in front of and after the MAF and twist it one way maybe 1/4 turn and try it.
