Boss 302 rod 4.6 shortblock

A short block we put together yesterday. Figured some might be interested since the 2012-2013 Boss 302 connecting rod has come up in discussion in the past.

Basics:
-2005 WAP block
-John Tymensky-spec standard bore Diamond pistons with a slight dome, stainless rings, H13 tool steel pins
-Boss 302 rods and rod bolts
-03/04 Cobra crank
-Tri-metal main and rod bearings
-ARP main studs
-3V windage tray

This one is eventually going to get a decent sized shot, so we'll give the Boss rods a little workout to see how they do.

I can't tell you how many people have been buying these rods. I hope Ford doesn't see there's some money to be made and increase their price.

Re: Boss 302 rod 4.6 shortblock

I've personally seen Boss rods hold 680 rwhp and 8,000 rpm with repeated street and track thrashings without issue. Even the non-Boss rods seem to live OK at 600+ rwhp and 7000-7500 rpm. So I'm not sure what the "safe point" on the Boss's really is.

I think if you plan on breaking 600-650 rwhp, spend the extra $$ on a Manley just to play it safe.

Re: Boss 302 rod 4.6 shortblock

Maximum Velocity here in SA. have a Boss with Kenne Bell's mammoth blower making 800hp with no problem. So im guessing they should hold up. I just ordered a set from tousley.

Yeah, but Manley only "rates" their H-beams for 750 HP even though they've held over 1000 rwhp. At 800+ RWHP I'd definitely go with a Manley (or better yet an Oliver) instead of a Boss.

So is the boss rod the same length as our stockers?

Re: Boss 302 rod 4.6 shortblock

Kinda bring is back from the dead a bit. But if I was gonna do the 3v windage tray on my Mach....do I need to add any studs? Are the studs already there?

Re: Boss 302 rod 4.6 shortblock

You have to get 3V ARP studs to have the stud extensions on the front 4 main caps which are necessary for the full length try. Coyote oil pan gasket might be an easier solution.

Compression is 11.5:1 with stock chamber volume.

This motor is for a buddy, I'm doing something a little different. Going with boost.

what would be needed to run the coyote gasket? at what rpm range will we start to see a benefit?

I'd like to go big bore 3.7". So I'd imagine I'd have to use boss wrist pins?
