Transmission whine

I am sure that there are a million threads concerning transmission whine but I am not 100% sure where to start my search. I have a 2004 Mach 1 w/5spd, it has 111000 miles on it. I changed the clutch, flywheel, and tob maybe a year or so ago. Anyway, about a month ago I noticed a very LOUD whine coming from the transmission, it starts as a deep noise but gets higher pitched as the rpms go up (it only does it when the car is in motion, whether the car is in neutral or in gear.) My girl friend's dad suggested changing the transmission fluid if it has never been done. I just wanted to get some opinions before I started looking at a spending a ton of cash. I hope I have been clear enough on describing the problem. Thanks in advance for the advice!

Re: Transmission whine

Since the fluid is a year old, I'd go ahead and change it.

3 quarts of mobil 1 synthetic ATF plus .25 quarts of Lucas Tranny fix is my suggestion. Or since yours has very high miles I might do 2.5 quarts of Mobil 1 and .75 of the Lucas.

A fluid change is cake, take off the shifter and fill it from the top after you drain it from the bottom plug. It takes a 3/8s drive at the bottom.

An old transmission like that is gonna have some whine

Re: Transmission whine

Sometimes the same sound can actually be coming from the rear end. Might want to check that with your current milage too. Look where the drive shaft attaches to the diff. See if it's leaking.

Re: Transmission whine

Thank you all for the suggestions. Sorry it took so long to reply. School has been hectic and net has been wonky. I replaced the fluid and the prob is still there. I am taking it to aamco for a free diagnosis (never been to them before). Hopefully it goes well.

Re: Transmission whine

Does it do it when its in 4th gear or does it go away then? If so then it is your input shaft bearing

Re: Transmission whine

Mine whines in every gear, the faster you go, the higher the pitch. It has a distinct "whub whub whub" sound on decel as well. It almost has a pod racer quality to it. The rear gears and bearings were replaced but the noise remained. I changed the transmission fluid to the "secret sauce" but that didn't help either. I picked up a mechanics stethoscope and was able to pin point the noise to the tail shaft area of the transmission. Mine sounds like a bad bearing in the tail of the transmisison.

If your's is anything like that, it could be a bad output shaft bearing as well.

Re: Transmission whine

Aamaco mentioned possible TOB, or possible transmission rebuild ($2400 including rebuild, clutch/flywheel, TOB). I feel like I could get a brand new one for not too much more? Anyway, I figured it was free but I'm gonna get a second opinion, this at least gives me an idea of where to possibly start looking.
