To charge, or not to charge

Lately I've been contemplating getting a supercharger for my mach. it's an 03, and has about 100k miles on it. it was dyno'd at about 340 hp at sea level, but I now live in Colorado, where there's a lot of elevation. (hence wanting to get the supercharger vs keeping it NA) I haven't dyno'd it here so I'm not sure of my hp loss.

Basically what I'm getting at is, I've read 450 and under for HP is the safe zone for our engines. But is that also true at altitude, where we lose hp? or is there less hp range before I'm in danger of blowing something with forced induction? or is it 450 hp, is 450 hp? Also I want to get the most bang for my buck obviously.

I am really wanting a supercharger, but I don't want to blow my engine and I would like some help since I don't know where else to look. Sorry if that was confusing, i tried to explain as best I can. ALSO sorry if I posted in the wrong category. any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks for your time.

Exclamation Re: To charge, or not to charge

I put a V-3 Vortec on my 04 with 80,000 miles. 800 miles later I bent a rod and cracked a piston skirt. I'm buying a new Aluminator engine now with all forged internals. I was making 439/396 at the wheels when the rod bent. If you can't afford the short block/engine, don't push it with your mileage.

Re: To charge, or not to charge

the thing is once you add a s/c its game on with the motor, so you could take the chance of blowing your motor or not, like stated above if you kinda don't have a budget for incase your motor goes then i wouldn't even bother with it.... if you just want alittle hp then get one and do it around 400 rwhp. get yourself a Eaton swap kit or any s/c and you will make that HP with no problem,

Re: To charge, or not to charge

Thanks for both of your responses. Do you guys have any idea where or how often the eatons get put up for sale? and would other superchargers be able to only put up 400 if I got one?

Thanks again, you both helped me out quite a bit.

Re: To charge, or not to charge

I'm planning to supercharge mine with 100,000 miles on it. I think as long as you've ran good oil, done good maintenance, and you get a safe tune the car will be okay.

I am in the same boat as you with the elevation problem. I am guessing you are at about 270rwhp right now.

I would also like to know. Is the safe limit 450hp SAE corrected, or 450hp to the wheels uncorrected? Cause if thats the case, you and I would need 560hp corrected to be at 450hp uncorrected.

you don't have to do a eaton swap, you will need to peace one togather if you go with a eaton swap, or you could do a procharger or vortech or KB, its all in your budget.

lets say you ran a Procharger P1sc and put a 4" pulley on it, you should be more than safe on running that. just when you get it on the dyno for the tuner tell him you want a street friendly tune (non agressive) and you should be fine

Which would be cheapest/easiest to find? And I like the whine the eaton produces, so thats not a deal breaker for me.

Re: To charge, or not to charge

Easiest to find is a pre packaged kit - Vortech, ProCharger, or Kenne Bell. If you can find someone selling a complete Eaton Swap, it can be the cheapest option...but having all the parts is the key. Otherwise, you can part one together over a very long period of time...

yeap he is right on finding all the parts needed to do a eaton swap and can get very frustating.

easiest i think is find in a for sale setion or ebay or any mustang forum and look for a used Procharger P1sc, you may need a diff assembly bracket, but really not a big deal.

the nice thing about procharger is its already going to come with a intercooler, on a vortech one you more than likly have to buy a intercooler

i'll see what i can fine on doing a small search

http://www.mach1registry.org/forums/...rocharger+p1sc

you could always put a WTB ad in the f/s section and see what comes up

Re: To charge, or not to charge

I made 431 in Fl heat with a eaton on 8psi for 2 yrs. Just added a 3.4 pulley(10psi) and made 472/444 on M/T which kill the power. Car has 81,000 miles. Oh and I turn mine to 7000 without any problems. Key is to have a good tune. I beat the HELL out of the car pretty much every weekend and has made a few 10hr + drives. I also did the eaton swap. Wasn't hard to find parts. Just stayed on forums and had no problem finding the parts.
