How does everyone like their aluminum flywheels?

Well I'm kicking around the idea of throwing one on. Just want to hear what you guys think about yours.

a little harder to daily drive but you get used to it..havent been to the track to see the performance gains from it yet though...waiting until it gets colder to get the best possible times

Re: How does everyone like their aluminum flywheels?

I'm looking at a Fidanza, I don't know of one with less weight. I was wondering about the performance gains.

Re: How does everyone like their aluminum flywheels?

Lethal has an ACT one that looks super light but then I go to ACT's site and it says there isn't one for our car.

Re: How does everyone like their aluminum flywheels?

Do some research on this, if you are drag racing you may want to stay with the iron wheel. It will spin up faster and is lighter but can fall on its face if you do not launch it hard. A bit tricky as it may bog on you. I am sure some will chime in on this.

I have an aluminium flywheel and found this out after I switched it out.

Are you switching out your clutch as well?

Re: How does everyone like their aluminum flywheels?

If your going to be launching at high rpm's on sticky tires you go with billet steel.

If you DD the car and don't plan to cut low 60ft times, with sticky tires, more power, and high rpms (its not a drag strip car) then aluminum is a great upgrade for DD and roll racing.

If you are on a budget, you use the stock nodular iron one.

Why do you say this? What makes aluminum bad for the drag strip?

The initial launch is trickier with an aluminum flywheel, since you don't store as much energy with the lighter rotating weight. Once the car is underway, an aluminum flywheel will accelerate quicker, since it isn't taking as much energy to spin the flywheel up at each shift.

Re: How does everyone like their aluminum flywheels?

I understand that but alot of things can help with the launch. A few examples would be more gear (ie 4.56s over 4.30s), more air pressure in the tires, higher launch RPM.

Re: How does everyone like their aluminum flywheels?

I will never use anything else.

I currently have a fidanza in my car.

I also use the Fidanza 4.3 Clutch, it is a beast.

What gears are you running and how would you rate the driveability/hold power of the 4.3 to a 03 Cobra setup?

Re: How does everyone like their aluminum flywheels?

It definetly will let you rev quicker. I put one in when I blew 3rd gear in my tranny and it made launching a bit harder. It really didn't show any differance at the track but I was also learning to race with a 5- speed for the first time.
My tranny has made about a 1000 passes on it since the light weight flywheel al. driveshaft and lightweight spool. I defintly think it will help your drivetrain last longer.

Re: How does everyone like their aluminum flywheels?

I put the Fidanza in my Mach. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to drive it much though. So, I can't give any real impressions yet.

I will say this, have it balanced before you get it installed. I asked my engine builder to do this and I'm glad I did because it was off quite a bit. I think he ended up drill 5 or 6 holes to balance it. I don't know what that equates to in mass, but I have to believe that many holes is significant.

Some hate an aluminum flywheel at the dragstrip for launching, and others like it.

I'd be curious to see a 500hp stang, built rear and tranny, strong clutch, on full slicks launch at redline with an aluminum flywheel and then with a billet steel flywheel.
