Brand New Black 2003 in SoFla
Hey Everyone,
Finally got a Mach 1! I found a 2003 5MT in black with only 4600 miles in my own back yard. I only had to drive 20 miles to check it out. It's like it was meant to be. I have already taken full advantage of this forum before making the purchase. It makes it a lot easier to buy an older car when you know there is this level of user support behind it. Thanks to everyone on this board and I look forward to enjoying the Mach with all of you. |

Re: Brand New Black 2003 in SoFla
It had tinted windows in it, but I spent yesterday tearing the tint out. It was bubbling badly.
It has a new battery which is good. It has the original tires which is bad because they have some dry rot. I have already ordered some Hankooks from TireRack. I have 16k miles on the Hankooks on my Trailblazer SS. They seem to wear well and have pretty good grip. And... They are cheap. About $600 installed with Road Force balancing. Other than that it looks stock to me. Here's a newbie question. The Mach has white crud on the rear wheels concentrated around the hubs. Any idea what this is and can I clean it off without screwing up the wheels? |

Welcome from Miisouri (great color choice)...
Pics of the "white crud" may help with diagnosis.

Re: Brand New Black 2003 in SoFla
The Pic is blurry but you can get the general idea.
It's kinda strange that it's on both rear wheels and not the fronts. Any ideas on what this is and if it can be removed/cleaned??? |

Re: Brand New Black 2003 in SoFla
Welcome from NY. Great find.
Is the white stuff on the surface or within the coating on the wheel?

Re: Brand New Black 2003 in SoFla
Welcome!
Be careful of wheel/chrome polishes because these wheels are clear-coated, so treat it like vehicle paint. You can use wheel cleaner but carefully follow the directions, especially the length of time to leave it on. A clay bar might help also. |

Re: Brand New Black 2003 in SoFla
I call that white crud, Aluminum Rust. It's probably under the clear coat (hard to tell from the pics). It's not "rust", but will need work to clean them. Has happened to my 4runner Aluminum wheels. Clear coat removal, a lot of elbow grease, polishing, and clear coating them again.

Re: Brand New Black 2003 in SoFla
Yep, it looks like it is under whatever is left of the clear coat. Washing/scrubbing has no effect other than cleaning the wheels. Are these brushed aluminum wheels or are they painted?
Here are the picks off of Ebay. The previous owner said the stripes were removed at the dealership at his request. I've got the replacement stripes that the dealer gave him. I'm debating putting them back on. You can't really see them against the black paint, but I would know they were there. The previous owner also installed a viper alarm system which is disabled, because it was a PITA. I'm still trying to get the rest of the tint off of the rear window. The thick piece of tint came right off but the thinner layer is stuck on the window nice and tight. I am steaming it off, then using Formula 88 Cleaner & Degreaser to get rid of the glue. I'm taking my time trying to get it done without marring the window or screwing up the defroster lines. |

Re: Brand New Black 2003 in SoFla
Just had the Mach at the Ford dealer in Margate to mount the new tires...
They did there 10,001 point check and said everything looked find except for the boots over the tie joints were split and needed to be replace. Everything else looked fine and was indeed stock. The original tires were very dry-rotted... plenty of tread by cracked inside the treads. Brand new tires are much quieter and just as grippy. :>) |

Re: Brand New Black 2003 in SoFla
Also.... Immediately after leaving the dealership, I got the Service Engine Soon light. Coincidence??? Perhaps.
Disconnected the battery, the light reset, but came back on later. Going to Advance Auto to get a read on the error code. Updates to follow. |
