Slipping bad in overdrive!

Yesterday I think I got on it a little too hard and had it in overdrive when I did it. I then noticed overdrive slipping very bad, but when I disengaged overdrive it seemed to operate fine.

So am I looking at a fubar band and what will I be shelling out to fix this self induced problem?

Is the Ford service place a better choice than say Cottmans?

Your trans is toast. Post on here and see who has a good rep with Ford transmissions in your area. I would not just go with anyone.

Agree, however you will need to remove it,ship it and be without it for a while.

Re: Slipping bad in overdrive!

I can do a slightly upgraded, mostly stock rebuild on a core transmission for less than they want and include shipping to you. But there would be a core charge or return shipping on your transmission. You wouldn't have much down time.

What I would build would be well more than what anyone would need for a mostly stock Mach and it will handle considerably more RPM than a stock transmission.

Wow , I maybe give Darrin some business soon for that kind deal.
I have not found any shops up here that will even open it up for under $2400.
I have one running weak right now.

I think what fried it was I was rolling at about 50 mph when I punched it.. Ive had my chip programmed to give firmer shifts, that may have had something to do with it.

I was referred to a local shop here in Austin. They build cars with 800 to 1500 hp and currently one of the guys holds the world record for a supra street legal car in a mile so Im pretty confident the guy who builds their transmissions can do mine. They are working on my 79 Trans Am S.E. so its convenient. Down time is about 3 days and it will run 300 to pull it and put it back in and 700 to 800 to rebuild it stronger than stock. I am getting a pretty good deal on it.

Re: Slipping bad in overdrive!

Thats what frustrates me the most. I drive it like an ooooold man 99% of the time. I often wonder why I needed 300+ HP when I rarely use more than half that.... but then one time..at band camp... and I'm paying for a rebuild...woe is me

Re: Slipping bad in overdrive!

4r70w transmissions rock. Ford just puts crappy converters and valve bodies in them and sometimes weak sprague style drums. I am sorry I did not chime in on this one sooner. I just picked up on the post. I do all of my own trans work and have had allot of experience with AOD, AODE, and 4r70w. The truth is the 4r70w is a work horse if built right. It does have a 2" overdrive band like its sister transmission the AODE which was a huge improvement over the 1.5" OD band that was used in the AOD. The largest issue on these transmissions is the lock up. It isn't the fact that the OD bands are weak. It's the stupid fact that any motor with lots of torque is going to tear any transmission up because the converters lock up at the worst possible times which really puts a load on all internals in the transmission. I run Lentech valve bodies in these transmissions which really extends the trans life on these 4r70w. They are expensive but Len did a great job at rerouting the oil circuits to boost line pressure making the shifts nice and strong. Second if you really want these cars to hook up hard then get rid of that lock up converter and go non locking with a nice true 3200 RPM stall. Not a cheap converter with an advertised stall of 3200 RPM. Granted you will lose about 10% of your fuel economy and you will need to run a transmission cooler but your transmission will be happy and you will gain almost .5 seconds in the quarter mile. Lastly make sure all of the drums in the transmission are ratcheting style vs sprague style. Sprague style drums suck plain and simple. AMong some other tricks this is the real recipe for success in my opinion. You can change the valve body any time just by dropping the pan and I can tell you that you will not be disappointed if you swap out the valve body with a nice stage 2 or 3 lentech unit.

Or for a huge butt ton less amont of money you could get a valve body from me

Extreme happiness and lots of extra cash in your pocket to buy other performance products with. Or money left over to buy a gift for your wife/fiancee/girlfriend to make up for spending money on car parts. With the added bonus of having spent less on car parts, thus requiring a smaller gift.

x2 I would already have one of Darrins converters to go with the trans I already got from him if only work hadn't cut my hours.

Re: Slipping bad in overdrive!

Overdrive band and/or direct clutches took a dump....my bet would be OD band. I'd see if they have a 'high energy' band for it,Borg-Warner makes them. The band material has a grayish-green color and holds up much better than the OE tan colored material. May need a reverse clutch drum as well depending on how bad the band glazed it up. Not sure if there is an aftermarket OD band servo out or not,but something else to look into as well.
