Re: 03 Mach 1 open heart surgery

Here are some shots of the engine bay when I was lifting the car. First time I've ever done a motor pull by lifting the car off the motor. It is strange to see the motor "sink" in the engine bay like that. The last pic is the car all the way up and on the locks. This little lift isn't bad at all. Not nearly as nice as a full sized BendPak but honestly, being able to get the car this high up in my garage with such a low ceiling is freaking awesome.

Re: 03 Mach 1 open heart surgery

You can see the power steering pump on the left of that first pic. I tied it up/out of the way to the sway bar mount. Once I had everything on the floor, I pulled my T56 magnum off the bell housing, that was so much easier than pulling it off the bell when it is in the car. I'm starting to become a believer in this process for motor swaps instead of going out the top, proper equipment available of course.

I'm going to be spending some quality time with some simple green and some rags to clean the under body and trans up, hopefully during some week nights so I can do real work on the weekends. I've been missing out on working on the car on weekends a lot due to different things. Last weekend it was some side work that needed to get done and it ate up all my free time for wrenching. Need the side work to pay for the projects but then you can't work on the projects!

Re: 03 Mach 1 open heart surgery

nice progress! Ive gone out the bottom in my garage with nothing more than some jack stands, engine hoist, wheel dollies and trans jack. You just need a way to secure the hoist to the car, I borrowed a big, square metal tube to put through my crash bar and put chains around that to rotate it up.

I wish I had enough ceiling height for a lift. I need to drop my Magnum trans and seal the shifter, I just dont feel like doing it on my back.

Re: 03 Mach 1 open heart surgery

congrates your getting there.
I would do a good cleaning all throughout the engine bay and under other spots that haven't been cleaned.

Re: 03 Mach 1 open heart surgery

Oh ya, I'm going to get out the simple green and some rags for sure. The trans is covered in a thin film of oil and I'm certain the under side of the car is as well.

I'm hoping to do the oil pan gasket as well as get the bell housing/clutch and whatnot put onto the new motor this weekend. Once I have that done I can swap the new motor into the cradle.

I still need to order new valve cover seals so I can swap the 03 covers onto the new motor. A shame too because I just did those on the old motor less than a year ago....

If your going to have the valve covers sprayed, do it now.

Re: 03 Mach 1 open heart surgery

I'm going to use the valve covers off my 03, I just want to keep it looking stock for the most part. The black ones I've got my original motor are in great shape even after all this time.

Good deal. That bothered me so much when the 03's came stock with black and on my 04 SY came with the others. I ended up buying some off an 03 and put them on my 04. It sure did look really good with the black valve covers. Happy my 03 came stock with them.

Re: 03 Mach 1 open heart surgery

I didn't get too much done two weekends ago. Just got the balancer off the old motor and cleaned things up a bit. This past weekend though I got the old motor out of the cradle and completely took the intake/wiring off the motor. I've got a few pics but I had a massive headache when I started working on it so I didn't stop to snap pics until the end. I'll post up the pics later and give a more detailed update.

Re: 03 Mach 1 open heart surgery

Been a while since I posted. The project is currently on hold but I've got some pics to throw up. I am currently visiting my family down in SoCal/working remotely until the middle of next month so no progress on the car for a bit.

The service tool didn't come with a way to store it or keep it organized so I spent idle time on zoom meetings where I didn't need to pay attention doing some 4th grade level 3D design work with Tinkercar. It is designed for kids so I was able to use it. Hopefully some day I'll get good with Fusion or Autocad but right now I don't have time to learn so. Tinkercad is close enough to legos that I can make it work. It wasn't perfect but I'm OK with it.

Re: 03 Mach 1 open heart surgery

For anyone that is wondering, where the hell do I put an aftermarket coolant temp sensor into my block? Well here is the answer. Well, at least one of the answers. There is a plug in there from the factory that has an Allen head swedged into it. Fair warning, you are going to take a bath in coolant when you pull this plug. Even in you drain the radiator, even if you put it on a cherry picker and tip the motor to drain everything out the lower radiator return, it doesn't matter. There is still more coolant in there. If you are going to use this spot for your aftermarket temp sensor, bring a bucket!

Re: 03 Mach 1 open heart surgery

Well, I think we know what caused the engine to finally stop working.... It is a lot more obvious in the second picture. I had a pic of the broken chain but somehow it got corrupted on my phone. Quite strange. Anyways, when you loose a cam chain on these motors bad things tend to happen. I don't know how bad the damage will be internally but I'm very much considering selling the heads/crank if they are good and turning the block into a coffee table or something. If the it turns out that the heads/valves aren't beat to hell from interference I might actually put it back together and make a running out of it over time.

Re: 03 Mach 1 open heart surgery

ouch

did the chain just fail or did a cam seize in the head and cause it to snap?

Re: 03 Mach 1 open heart surgery

That is a good question. The motor was running rough and I'm fairly sure I felt/heard the chain snap so I suppose it is possible the cam stopped turning and that is why the chain snapped. When I get back in a couple more weeks, I'll see if I can get the cam to spin freely to figure that out. It will be interesting to see what the other side looks like when I pull the passenger side valve cover.
