Auto Meter Electric Water Temp & Oil psi Gauge Installed

As you can tell no more CD/radio. I also removed the rear speaker/amps which comes out as a unit and door lower speakers. The weight of stereo system components removed = 32 lbs.

I made the gauge bracket from aluminum and used the exsisting CD/Radio mounting bolts. I water honed the aluminum to give it a brushed aluminum look. Right now I just did a mock up fit and will start with all the wiring and sending unit install. I'm going to test the gauges next before final installation.

Here are some pics:

Phil: Looks sharp...Gotta love that "All Business Look!"

Can you let us know where the sending unit for the oil pressure guage went and what kind of tubing/piping you are going to use.

Thanks

Thanks guys!

03zinc, no your not hijacking the thread! The install will take time but, nothing major.

Some pics of oil psi sending unit and water temp sending unit location. The auto meter electric gauges come with their own sending units.

Installing the water sending unit I have a couple of options.
Either Tee of factory sender so, I can retain it for automatic cooling fan operation. Or tap into the cooling bleed screw/cap on top of coolant piping under neath shaker.

First pic is location of our factory water temp sending unit:

The oil sending unit located under the oil filter boss. Just below this is a threaded hole which is capped off with a threaded plug and loctited.

so for the oil pressure gauge all you do is screw a new sending unit into an existing hole?

I just didnt want to have to drill and tap ay holes in anything. would be afraid of metal shaving getting in my baby

That's how it appears for now. I may have to get a 90 degree elbow/adapter due to clearance problems with the Auto Meter supplied sending unit diameter & length hitting the power steering control unit lines.

As for the Auto Meter water sending unit, it will be more involved like maybe tapping. You want to retain the factory sending unit and harness or the cooling fan will probably not turn on when temp is reached.

Looks good. Now remove all the speakers and the wiring to save even more weight. And please, ditch those floor mats.

Thanks Sapper!

You mean floor mat, now there is only one in there. I was thinking of turning them into rear mud flaps!!!!!!

I noticed that your oil pressuer guage only reads 100 psi. I am willing to bet that you peg that gauge constantly... In my old race car (4.6L 2V) I had to run a 150 psi oil prerssure gauge. These modulars seem to make a ton of oil pressure. It looks sweet.

Thumbs up Great Pics

Thanks for the info & pics Phil.

After reading a few threads about our stock oil pressure & water temp guages being nothing more then 'switches', I think I will be going to be installing some after market guages myself.

I to added the oil pressure gauge and I will say I come very close to pegging it out.....but I think it reads just fine with 100psi limit..... I too tapped into the bottom side of the oil filter with a tee so I have both the factory and the aftermarket sending units comming out of the top hole....I use the bottom hole with the 1/4 plug to feed the turbos.......it was a nightmare getting the oil line plumbed due to the rack.......be real careful not to over torque the hardware you are ptting into the soft alum......it deforms really easy........

San Pedro Mach glad to help and thanks!

Sounds good about the oil psi gauge speedingmach. Nice set up inside you have.

I just installed the electric oil pressure sending unit. I took pics to show the 90 degree 1/4 NPT adapter so now I have plenty of room. I'm also using the exsisting CD/radio wires for switched ignition power (which is factory fused) and interior dim light for my gauge lights which will only come on when headlight/parklight knob is pulled, also factory fused.

I'm starting on the water temp sending unit and will be going with a setup shown in the pic. This supplied plug is a NPT thread and the factory coolant plug thread is UNC. I will locate or make a plug.

Here are the pics:

I found the block water jacket plug for an additional temp sending unit, mechanical or electrical. It's located on the drivers side rear of block below a freeze plug next to where the trans mounts to block. I have to determine for sure what size thread. I read on a post that it's a metric 16m-1.5...

I feel this location will give the best (hottest) water temp reading since number 7 & 8 cylinders run hotter than the rest.

The oil pressure gauge works good using the recomended by Auto Meter 18 ga wire. Once the oil is hot, at idle it's reading 25-30 psi. When I'm at highway speeds it's about 70-75 psi. I did not look at it when I was running last week at WOT down the track.

Phil,

Can you get me more pics and info on that connection for my mechanical water guage?

I've had mine for a while but haven't been able to get it hooked up. It looks like a tight fit with the fill plug on the tube if front of the alternator. How can I hook it up to that plug in the pic above?

Thanks for your time AGAIN!

What size thread is your mechanical sending unit?

If you know someone in a machine shop or take the factory coolant plug to a shop and have them drill thru and tap the plug so you can screw in your sending unit. If the thread diameter is diameter on your sending unit is 5/8-18 UNF than this will be to large to drill and tap factory coolant plug.

Or use the additional block water jacket plug and there are all types of adapters that will mate your mechanical sending unit to block. Summit Racing under Auto Meter sells these adapters. Or go direct to Auto Meter. I will find out soon what thread it is. If you can, I would recomend using this secondary block plug location for your temp sending unit.

L&M no longer (for now) makes a matching plug adapter which mimics the factory coolant bleeder plug with the addition of a tapped thru hole to fit the sending unit.
