Re: Inside trim color

I've been chasing that dragon for some time. There are a number of Mustang supply shops that offer it in a spray, but when I've purchased them, they do not match up to the original pieces in my car. The paint being sold is too dark, too grey. The pieces in my car are a bright silver and when I purchased a used replacement center stack on ebay, it matched perfectly. Ford only offers the center stack trim in charcoal, not the IUP silver. I'm to the point of sending an original part off to try to have the paint matched.

Re: Inside trim color

If you have an original part I'd take it to your local paint supply shop and have them match it

Re: Inside trim color

Well i am happy that I am not the only one trying to figure it out.
If it becomes something that I need to get a painter involved I will, I was just hoping I could find it in a perfect match spray can or be able to buy it and be able to spray it. Thanks.

Re: Inside trim color

Yep-----nope!
Not a good match. If you were painting both pieces you could probably get by with it, but since I was only doing the center stack and didn't want a mis-match with the shifter surround I test painted one piece and it was waaaay off. I'd also gotten a custom can from R&E auto, who does very good automotive aerosol paints, using the Ford # I kept running across. Not joy on either.

Re: Inside trim color

Here's a shot of the original (top left w/crack), OE used replacement (lower left), unpainted replacement (top right), and painted new replacement with the offered paint (lower right). You can see the color variation.
The new Ford piece is much thicker and heavier, as they must have realized how flimsy the original was and it does succum to the heat over time.

Re: Inside trim color

I will say that this is for an early production 2003 car, I don't know if the color changed from year to year or later in the production run, but yep, it's ain't even close!
That's why I took the photo two years ago right before the Houston regional when I was frantic to find a good replacement IUP center stack. Fortunately a member here had one from a V6 car with IUP. There is no difference between V6, Cobra and Mach 1 stacks, but I was surprised how many 'experts' out there didn't even know there was a different color one from the standard charcoal piece. (Mostly Cobra guys, oddly enough)
