Maybe a 4.10 is more ideal than a 4.30 or steeper on the streets
Like many of you are or have been, I am on the brink of purchasing/installing a gear and 4.10 or 4.30 is the continuous question of the day.
The following two maybe examples that any gear steeper than a 4.10 is too much for the streets... NOTE: None of the following cars are mine. I am simply doing research on which gear to get and found these two examples. Example 1 Comparable bolt on Mach 1 (4.30 gear) vs bolt on 01 Cobra (3.73 gear) http://videos.streetfire.net/search/...ec01651978.htm Example 2 Post link: http://www.svtperformance.com/forums...d.php?t=369511 Condensed verion: 2003 Mach 1 - JLT RAI, Magnaflow Magnapack weld in mufflers, UPR O/R x-pipe, aluminum flywheel, Spec 3 clutch, short throw shifter, Diablo Predator basic tune, 18x10 wheels out back with some fat tires, 4.56 gears 2003 Mach = 270hp w/ 289tq. 2001 Zinc Yellow Ford Cobra: Short Throw Shifter, JLT CAI, SCT Tuner, FRPP Cross Drilled Rotors, FRPP Catback Exhaust, Meguiars NXT Tech Wax 2001 Cobra = 280hp w/ 285tq

Steep gears only work if you have complete traction.. if you spin, you're screwed... with 3.55s or 3.27s you have that topend charge and a hardcore advantage if you go from a roll instead of a stop....
Gears suck from a roll....

The 4.30's that I have in my car do really good trust me. When I was racing him in that Video from a First Gear Punch (Bad Mistake) trust me!!!!!! I was spinning so bad in 1st gear and Horrible in 2nd gear, about the time I quit spinning and got into 3rd Gear he had done pulled me pretty good. I caught back up to his Back Bumper and before I could pull him any more (YES) I ran out of Gear!!!! thats the only down fall of those gears. From a 2nd Gear Punch though it's a different story. I was putting a Car and a 1/2 EASY!!! between us. Also I had extra weight and he was flying solo. So I should have pulled him worse than that, oh yeah and I didn't take my Belt off the front either, since I have a Elec.WaterPump. IF I was to do it over again I would have at least put 3 or 3 1/2 Cars in between us. It was a good Race though!!!! If you get 4.30's guy's make sure you have good Drag Radials!!!!! Trust me im learning from my mistakes.

I can't wait to see what he will run when ever he gets some Drag Radials!!!! His 01' Cobra should run at least a 12.6 or 12.7 by seeing how it runs. For what little he has done to it, trust me it's fast. It was a fun race though. If I was to give any advise 4.10's or 4.30's would be the way to go. 4.30's are just better for the track I think or Street Racing Red Light to Red Light.

4.56's here, and I love them. I use fifth as a freeway passing gear!

Correct, but buying 4.56s for your narrow sidewall high wear rating 18inch tires is a terrible idea....

Re: Maybe a 4.10 is more ideal than a 4.30 or steeper on the streets
Curious here.
The video shows a Red Cobra, the description lists a Zinc Yellow one. As for the Cobra running 12.6-12.7, I really don't think that is too much of an if. Sticy tires, 3.73's, and a tune. Should be there. My brothers 99 Cobra went 13.2 completely stock with some crappy General tires out back. |
