Angry Enjoy the car my a**..freakin rear end issues again

Ok, since my gear install fiasco, I finally had install done semi correctly (I say semi since I always had a slight whine on decel). It seemed to me to be getting worse. Yesterday , I did a slight burnout and 1,2,3 pull and drove normal. Next thing I know , as soon as I let my foot off the gas, I get this loud *** like a chung, chung , chung , like a banging sound. As soon as I hit the gas, go away..so tomorrow pulling pan since shop owner and mechanic that put gear in said they never heard a sound like it before, The fluid came out like water and gray, my prediction is first dude awhile back never installed clutch packs correctly and I have wore out clutch packs and also on slight tip in throttle I hear a slight metallic sound like washers shuffling together..will update what I find out.

Make sure the crush sleeve was replaced. Mine wasn't when the seal was replaced the second time and it was like all he11 broke loose in the pumpkin.

EXACTLY what mine sounded like when I grenaded the spider gears. Time for a Tru Trac.

Yea this was another possibility I thought of, was tossing around the idea of going to a 3.55 gear as well since eventually may upgrade to a TVS and a 4R70...thoughts???

I'm going with one of these babies as well. That's why it's taking me so long to upgrade. Gotta save $$ LOL.

Ah, don't feel bad. I'm right there with you. I rebuilt the rear end, changed front wheel hubs twice, replaced the motor and trans, and my Mach still grinds and sounds like super swamper tires. Now I have to put timing guides on the motor I just installed.

Got to pack them tight to last. Seems I'm one of the few who stands by the cobra diff. In for pics of the carnage.

I rebuilt mine last fall and went with the Cobra clutch pack as well..I did the alternate assembly so they pack tighter. So far,so good. A little groaning when sharp cornering at slow speed...

Re: Enjoy the car my a**..freakin rear end issues again

Well, pulled cover and no carnage. 2 ring bolts had backed out, caught it just in time. You could see where loctite hadn't somehow gripped in the threads. Installed bolts with bigger heads, loctite, refilled and no issue. Clutches looked good..all is well in Larry Land again..thanks guys. Rotated DS and still have a vibration at about 70 mph on up...gonna try putting dogbone back in as a free try..if not, still leaning towards tubular k member on this one.

Re: Enjoy the car my a**..freakin rear end issues again

I don't get it. Have built dozens of rearends over the past 20 years and have never had a ring gear bolt back out yet I hear about it from time to time. I'm always wondering if guys just don't use a toque wrench or don't double check them.

Exactly what I texted to Larry. I ALWAYS use blue loctite and torque to 85-90 ft. lbs. Never had an issue.

When you deal with shops here in my piss ant town you would no longer be surprised..BTW it was the SAME shop that did install and STILL nailed me for $129, thank God I was adamant it was the rear, they were saying input shaft slop

Re: Enjoy the car my a**..freakin rear end issues again

I am going back today..I have driven the car 3 times and every morning when I come out there is gear oil under the car..bad enough it is on sway bar and blowing out and onto rear bumper cover..looks like it may be coming out vent tube. Dud actually told me I could jack up the car and let some out . My reply was I had $129 reasons for them to do it since I had NO issues before with oil leaking on the ground..man do I need a shop that knows what the f**k they are doing

Re: Enjoy the car my a**..freakin rear end issues again

I too have done several gear installs and rear end tune ups.
The crush sleeve thing is over rated.
If the dimensions are the same on the new pinion gear or close with in a couple thousands you have no worries re- install it and tighten it down the proper way.
Don't use an impact for re install ever in the pinion area.
there is supposed to be inch pounds of resistence but thats after the nut is tight.
there are a few other details that are involved but it sounds to me like the shop that did the work does not know what they are doing.
Alot of techs are scared of gear installs there are pleanty of videos on youtube as well to help.
Try it on your own like I did with the help of someone technical.
Sorry to hear about your troubles but the ring gear bolts backing out is totally UN Acceptable!

Re: Enjoy the car my a**..freakin rear end issues again

I went back today since gear oil was blowing out vent so bad it was on my rear plate..dude pulled filled plug and it came out solid for about 5 seconds then he put plug back in and sprayed off all the gear oil coating rear of the car.
