Question ARCO gas? Ford Recommends BP

I didn't find many searches on this but was just wondering if any of you use ARCO 91 gas? I remember awhile back some said it was junk but when I had my brand new rental Ford says on their gas caps "Ford recommends BP." BP owns ARCO so shouldn't we use it because it is cheaper but meets all the standards as Shell, Chevron, etc. And I know in Cali there are tons but not sure about other states.

Re: ARCO gas? Ford Recommends BP

I saw that on a new 09 recently. I laughed... Just figured it was a clever marketing idea.

Maybe BP paid for all of the fuel caps???

I use name brand but I am not sure if the detergents thing is true and if the gas is actually any better. I am sure you could do a test but in different states and different shipments they could all produce different findings.

This is one of the things that drives up the price of gasoline and occasionally causes shortages. Different states require different formulations by law, as well as different formulations for winter and summer. So when an area runs out of "their" gas, you can't just ship gas in from another state and the refineries don't keep all the different formulations lying around. All these different types of gas, combined with all the governmental red tape and all the federal and state taxes puts a tremendous burden on the oil companies which they pass along to the consumer.

The burden is always passed . It doesn't surprise me that it is complicated and involves the gov't

Ford recommends BP because all the additives make the car burn cleaner thus making Ford look better.

Re: ARCO gas? Ford Recommends BP

There is a difference in gas from company to company and you get what you pay for. I know this because my 427FE in my '70 Mach 1 has 11.7 compression and years ago I would set the timing to run on 92 octane Amoco (BP) fuel without any problems. If I used 92 octane from other manufacturers the engine would ping, so I know there is a difference. Now I don't worry about it since I always run 100 octane, but will soon be switching over to 105 octane E85. With the newer Mach I can tell a difference mainly in mileage for that particular tank of gas.

Re: ARCO gas? Ford Recommends BP

They have Arco stations in the Seattle area. Their gas is always 10-15 cents cheaper than any other gas station in town, but I don't go there. Too many people have said their gas sucks, and some of those people have asked mechanics and they say the same thing. I don't have any proof though. I use Shell.

I try to at least get one of the big brands, but I like to stick with shell. The other day I found a shell down the street that sells 95....

Re: ARCO gas? Ford Recommends BP

I use ARCO gas in all three of our vehicles. Our Ranger for 12 years, wifes Mustang for 11 years and the Mach for 5 1/2 years. Have not had any emission problems, and I live in California. I see no reason to pay more.

Dang...didn't know ARCO was still around. We haven't had them in the Northeast in over a decade!

Over on this side, I use Valero fuels. 93 octane with no Ethanol

BTW, my Focus has the "BP Advertisement" on the gas cap too

Re: ARCO gas? Ford Recommends BP

Honestly in any new vehicle you can use any brand including the cheaper ones and you likely won't notice a difference. It's only if you're teetering on actually needing the octane that you'll find a difference in your car.

I notice a 2-3 mpg difference when using Valero gas in my Focus vs. the local cheap stuff. Since Valero (at least around here) has no ethanol in their gas, and all the other stations use a blend, I get better mileage out of the Valero fuel.

Now, in the Mach, I only use Valero 93 or Sunoco 93 (only stations with 93 in the area), and I don't see any appreciable difference.

Re: ARCO gas? Ford Recommends BP

ARCO mixes alcohol in there gas. It is cheaper and I buy it most of the time. I had an old f-250 with a 390 and it would ping unless I used premium from shell, chevron, Texaco. I could burn regular ARCO without any ping. It did idle rough from the ARCO gas tho. I don't put it in the Mach, it only gets the best.

Re: ARCO gas? Ford Recommends BP

I don't know who knows this but pretty much in Cali we are stuck with 91 for the major brands. I know a place that has 100 but I don't think paying that much or using it would be a wise decision as far as I know.

Re: ARCO gas? Ford Recommends BP

I have been using Mobile gas in the Mach ,Jet skis and Sport bike . I know its not a Tier1 gas..whatever that means But I have never had a problem using it .I used to mix it 50/50 with Union 76 105 Octane race gas to run in my roadrace bike for a spec gas class too. I also have used Shell 93 with good results .But i will never use BP ..not even in my lawnmower..many times the gas pinged in just about everything i put it in !

Re: ARCO gas? Ford Recommends BP

What's up with Shell adding nitrogen now? Or is that just CA? It's an inert gas--can't be good when the object is to burn the fuel. I suppose it might raise the octane rating, though...
