All Stick Drag Racers Look! Need Help.
I just got a call from the transmission shop that I took my stock 3650 to. The trans is ****ed 3 ways from sunday and needs 2nd and 3rd gears replaced, synchros, rings, gears and all. I am a weekend drag racer and the trans gave up after 150+ passes down the strip. I'm making 318wtq so somewhere north of the 360tq capacity of the 3650.
Here is my issue. I don't see the logic in repairing this transmission if it is going to break again with more track use. I am looking for a good manual transmission for drag racing that wont destroy the street driveability of the car. It is my daily driver until I can get my Nissan running, but thats a long way off (even longer now that I need a trans for the stang.) I like being able to cross the line in the top of third gear without having to hit a 3rd shift into 4th gear. Does anyone have any reccomendations on transmissions? I would like to keep the budget under control becuase a) I'm very short on cash, the family has given up eating out to help me afford repairs, and b) every dollar saved on the Mustang is a step closer to finishing the Nissan. As said above I would like something that avoids the need to shift to 4th gear. I'm really in a bind here. Stuff breaks at the worst moment.

Being that you are short on cash...go to car-parts.com and look for a used trans...then SAVE for a tko

Re: All Stick Drag Racers Look! Need Help.
Looking at $1200+ for rebuild, and then its gonna break after another season anyway....
If I stay with the 3650, I guess ProMotion has some stuff? I cant understand thier site at all.... I have time to save, becuase the car is on stands now, not gonna pass inspection without a trans, and I won't be home or racing over the summer. Just would like to have things work for once so I could finish the Nissan and then let the mach do its thing without issue....

ProMotion has a built 3650 for $1650. Member fas4d is running it with over 600rwhp and says it shifts 100x's better than stock. If you want to stick with the 3650 I would go with that. You would need a new clutch plate though, as it has a 26 spline input shaft.

Re: All Stick Drag Racers Look! Need Help.
more street oriented trans = T56
more strip oriented trans = TKO or if you want call Dan@PSR and tell him you want to buy my old 3650. its got maybe 5k on it. shifts perfect, maybe 5 trips down the strip with it. was mostly driven by my ex gf when it was in the car

Re: All Stick Drag Racers Look! Need Help.
Thanks for all the help guys.
As soon as the Nissan project is done, the Mach will be come a dedicated drag car and will see ever increasing power so I am going to do the transmission right the first time. I am looking at putting in a TKO600 and be done with it. It should be strong enough for my needs as the car will be NA for the forseeable furutre but I wont rule out a blower later on. I found a TKO for sale in the low $2000 range and if it starts doing the shitty shift at high RPM I've heard about, I'll take it to G-Force transmissions and have them do the face plate work. Can anyone explain what faceplating is exactly? Thanks for the help again, glad to be back.

Re: All Stick Drag Racers Look! Need Help.
a stock TKO500/600 is not meant to shift above 6500 rpm. i have a promotion tko600 going in my car soon. it is FULLY built with all the options, however it will be difficult to drive on the street. their 3650 is a sweet and much less expensive deal. there is a guy on modularfords that is selling one i believe.
you mentioned staying in 3rd gear. if you plan on dragging this car then the most beneficial mod you can do is gears, meaning you will be using 4th. also if you stay to a fairly low (numerically) gear then you'd be better off with a tko500 or 3650 rather than a t56 or tko600 as these have a numerically lower 1st gear and you will lose most of your torque (the little bit that mod motors do have) upon launch.
