Re: TOB secrets

New ford racing tob, ford racing clutch lever and ford oem pivot ball stud installed. The chirping is gone for now, hopefully it stays that way for a long time. I have high hopes this time around because the clutch feels and engages exactly as I remember it did when it was all stock, and that original tob lasted all the way to 84k miles when I pulled it out doing longtubes and new clutch.

Also, I'm happy to note that pedal slop is 100% gone. No rattling pedal at any rpm now. What a huge difference a new lever and pivot stud make. Not changing those two items would be a mistake if you're already in there and the car has any real miles on it. Another thanks to Mach351 for the lever!

I've always regretted not replacing them on mine when I got a new clutch some years back.

It never crossed my mind to replace them either until now.

I am glad to hear its working great for you !
That"s why I love this site so much.
Great info from a bunch of smart people who get there hands dirty.
Only thing left to order is the clutch cable ( Ford ) and sticking with the factory adjuster for now.

I recently had a pressure plate bolt back out so why I was in there I replaced tob, ball stud and fork. They most definitely are wear items and it feel good now.

Yep, looking over my original ball stud, it was flattening out on one side.

Re: TOB secrets

Get those TOB's away from the pressure plate with a return spring/freeplay mod. This one thing will drastically increase the life of you TOB. Sure you can just adjust the firewall adjuster until it's just barely touching but my experience is that it can still make noise if there isn't a definite air gap there. Plus who wants a floppy clutch pedal. The return spring in the freeplay mod takes up this slack so it feels like OEM.

For those who already hear crickets, jack up the car, remove the inspection cover and with a long screwdriver start adding a little bit of bearing grease to the TOB. Move the pedal up and down a few times then crank her up and slowly pump the pedal a few more times. Turn it off and repeat the process a couple more times. If you do this before it gets too bad you can extend the life of your TOB, but you need to install the freeplay mod at the same time to get the most benefit. Do not add too much! You don't want grease all over your clutch.

Also FYI, Ford Racing TOB's are now made in China. I bought a Ford OEM one at my local dealership instead. It was still made in the USA and stamped Timken. But that was a couple years back so YMMV.

Re: TOB secrets

Doh! Yup I had a bunch of tabs open with different OEM replacement parts for my Mach 1 on ebay and I posted the wrong one. But now I can't find the one on ebay that I meant to post.
