Snapped an axle yesterday. Now what?

I went down to the track yesterday on the first day they opened since a year or two and on my first pass with some slicks and skinnies I snapped an axle.

I took everything apart today and I'm going to need everything. The axle snapped at the spline on the carrier so I can't get that piece out. I figure I'm not going to deal with it since who knows if it will break on me if I launch it hard again.

I took the diff out and now I'm going to upgrade it.So what I'm looking for is suggestions on what to build the rear end with. 31 spline? 28spline(again)

What brands? Someone said the ford racing 31 spline would be at risk of breaking just like the stock setup I broke.

Help please

Re: Snapped an axle yesterday. Now what?

first thing is what are your plans for the car?

what brand axles did you have?

stick or auto?

strip queen? street car with some strip? or all street with occasional strip?

if its all street you may want to look at 33 spline

street with some strip then prob some good aftermarket axles and a 31 spline carrier.

street occasional drag good 28 spline axles and what ever cheap carrier you can get

also you may want to consider a slick with a wider side wall so it absorbs more of the hit

Re: Snapped an axle yesterday. Now what?

31 spline 03 cobra center with strange or moser axles.

This setup has been good to 10.44 with 1.55 sixty foot

Snapped an axle yesterday. Now what?

Thanks for the suggestions guys. The car is driven on the street 90% of the time. It sees the strip decently often. Maybe 2 times a month I've gone as long as 3 months without going so it's back and forth. This was my first time out on this setup and it snapped the axle with a 4k rpm launch. The car is a 5 speed.

Would like to know opinions about ford racing 31 splines as well.?.

Where do they fall on the quality list?

Re: Snapped an axle yesterday. Now what?

31 spline set up for simplicity and will take a ton of abuse. The 31 spline ford unit is surprisingly strong and probably the best bang for the buck. Most of the aftermarket 31 spline units will serve you well.

I really liked my truetrac on the street and strip. Took 400+ 6500rpm launches before my 31 spline axles twisted.

33 spline set up requires c-clip elims which suck for the street or going to 9" end which moves the price and complexity of build up a bit.

I have a brand new set of 31spline mosers for sale with 3" arp studs. I installed them and drove about 50miles then decided to go a different route.

Re: Snapped an axle yesterday. Now what?

I am not surprised your stock axle snapped while launching your heavy car on slicks.

About a week after I bought the car new I broke an axle. I replaced the rear with an Eaton Posi and Tom's kick-*** axles (31 spline). My car is a daily driver that has about 400 passes on it. At 300 passes the Eaton started making noise so I replaced it with a Detroit Trutrac and kept the axles.

Since your car will be mainly street driven with track use, I suggest getting the Detroit Trutrac and the axles lcaptmorg's has.

Re: Snapped an axle yesterday. Now what?

I have always run a 31spline Ford truck posi with an extra clutch pack and upgraded s-spring in my street/strip car(s). that and moser 31's.
after 500+ passes in my old coupe on slicks, and @ 9 years I re-built the rear end and went back with the same hardware...I beat that set up hard...

nothing was broken, but the splines were starting to twist...and the spider gears were pretty pitted...

Re: Snapped an axle yesterday. Now what?

Buy the ford unit with carbon fiber clutches or get a truck section and put carbon fiber clutches in it.
I launch my mach at 7000 rpm on Hoosier QTP's.

Hmmm this decision is just getting harder and harder. I'm getting suggestions left and right but so far I don't feel like there's a clear cut answer.

I like the ford racing unit because of the price plus it's beefier than stock but I had someone out doubt in my head already. I really want something I can just buy without having to change anything.

I also saw an eaton truetrac Detroit locker diff that looked nice but again idk what to go with.

Re: Snapped an axle yesterday. Now what?

They are two very different diffys that both work very and of course the price is certainly a factor. What should not be is the sturdiness of the frp unit. I and many have beat the hell out of them and I have only seen one break in 18 years of racing mustang. A very good local friend still runs it behind his 8.50 turbo car and has done so for years.

Just to clarify eaton truetrac and the Detroit locker are very different.

Thank you for clearing that up. I guess I got confused because of the way it was worded on the summit website.

I guess I'll have to keep doing my research before I pull the trigger and make the buy.

Re: Snapped an axle yesterday. Now what?

The truetrac behaves more like an aggressive limited slip. They are slightly noisey, but its a great unit for the street. The locker is well, a locker. Both wheels will turn all the time when throttle is applied. The locker is different mannered to drive compared to a more street friendly diff. It is also fairly noisey as well. I like how my alternate packed FRPP diff behaves more than the truetrac and locker diff cars I've been in. I dislike how the stock diff behaves more than all of them.

My opinion, get a truetrac unless you are willing to swap a spacer in the FRPP carbon diff with a steel clutch pack from your stock diff.

Re: Snapped an axle yesterday. Now what?

I probably added to the confusion when I said an incorrect thing. I am running the Eaton Trutrac (not Detroit Trutrac).
