Possible Fuel Pump or Fuel Pump Driver Module Issue

Here's what I have going on- Car is 2003 with 8,500 miles totally stock. The other day, drove car to gas station across town to fill with 100% gasoline 93 fuel. Car was on 1/4 tank gas at time I filled it up. Car drove great although did notice that the idle was slightly rough at times.

After filling car, started and pulled away from the pump. Car was rough and as I pulled into street, car died. Rolled into parking lot and car would just crank with no fire. Could not hear the pump engage and thought that I had lost the fuel pump. Car towed back to my garage. Car had a P1237 Fuel pump primary circuit malfunction code. Doing research here and other places, people pointed to the Fuel Pump Driver Module. Although I did find someone on this forum who experienced almost the same scenario. That person stated that they had removed the battery negative to allow the computer to "clear" and once re-installed the car started and ran. So, I decided to try this. Removed negative battery cable and turned on the light switch for about 10 minutes, then reinstalled the cable. Car started and ran for approximately 5 minutes, roughly but running. After it died, car would only crank.

I then found a Ford service diagnosis diagram for the Fuel Pump Driver Module. I tested the connector based on the instructions and found that the connector was above 10.9 volts (actually like 12 volts) which says that the FPDM needs to be replaced.

I purchased from Rock Auto, a new aftermarket Fuel Pump Driver Module. Installed in the car, car still only cranked, no start. I have not tried "clearing" the computer at this time with this module. Will do that later today.

Any ideas? Could I have a bad aftermarket FPDM? It seems that the pump will cycle and produce pressure. Because it would start, leads me to believe it may not be the pump and instead, something that is controlling the pump. From what I am reading, the pump pressure is determined by the voltage supplied?

Any ideas or anyone with similar experience please chime in.

Re: Possible Fuel Pump or Fuel Pump Driver Module Issue

Do these cars have a shutoff for the fuel pump in case of a crash. Its located in the rear of the vehicle (trunk) I think we have like a shutoff switch. Could that be it??
Following to see what everyone says...

Re: Possible Fuel Pump or Fuel Pump Driver Module Issue

Yes, they have the inertia switch. But I believe it is situated before the Fuel Pump Driver Module. And that's why the Ford Service diagnostic has you measure voltage on two pins in the connector. With key on, they say you should have 10.9 volts or more. If yes, key off and replace FPDM.

Part of me thinks that there is nothing wrong with the FPDM but the new one didn't solve the issue.

Pump shutoff reset button is on the tail lamp panel next to the drivers side tail lamp assembly inside the trunk.

Re: Possible Fuel Pump or Fuel Pump Driver Module Issue

From what I researched, it probably a bad fuel pump.

Re: Possible Fuel Pump or Fuel Pump Driver Module Issue

Well, finally resolution to this issue. Fuel pump driver module was not the issue. Fuel pump was. Replaced fuel pump, car starts/drives normal.

Re: Possible Fuel Pump or Fuel Pump Driver Module Issue

What fuel pump did you end up going with? I believe mine is sticking. If it sits in storage long enough, it won't start.

I took a hammer and gave the bottom of the tank a love tap and was able to get it running a few weeks ago when I need to move it out of the garage. Same thing happened last spring. I'll double-check and make sure there is power at the pump next time it happens, but I'm thinking it's the pump based on the issues I've read on the forums.

should drop you in a focus fuel pump since it is plug and play and may do better than the stock ones.

Thanks for coming back on and updating.
Glad you got it figured out.
It can be a pita trying to track down what the problem is, but once you do it is a blessing.

Re: Possible Fuel Pump or Fuel Pump Driver Module Issue

Hey all,
I’m sorry to piggy back on this thread but for some reason I can’t see all the threads in the main forum area. By happen stance this was the last modified thread so it showed up to the right of the forum heading. I will make a new thread as well but thought this was relevant to the topic.

I’m having a similar issue. I went to pull my mach out of storage and it wouldn’t start, just cranking. I left it with a full tank hoping moisture wouldn’t become an issue and also added Heet to the fuel but no other stabilizers. I immediately assume it’s bad gas so I go and get about 2 gallons and had another bottle of Heet in storage. I added the Heet and trickled a very small amount of new fuel into the tank. Still wouldn’t start and I drained the battery so I took it home to charge it. Brought the battery back and got it to ignite a few times and finally started. She ran for about 10-15 minutes, albeit roughly.

Started getting smelly inside the storage shed so I pulled it out and it stalled and won’t start. I’d like to drain the tank without dropping it and may have a small siphon but I read there is a way to remove the pressure check valve on the fuel rail, add some hose out to a container, then somehow jumper the fuel pump so it stay on when you turn the key on and drain the fuel that way.

Is this feesible? If so does anyone know of a video or instructions documenting the procedure?

Thanks,
Shane
