How To: Front Wheel Bearing Hub Assembly

A worn front wheel bearing can cause swaying while driving, vibrations, grinding sounds, and safety problems causing you to NOT GO FAST.

Time:45Mins
Tools Necessary:
-Torque wrench capable of 250ftlbs 1/2'' attachment
-Flat Head Screw Driver
-Hammer
-Jack
-Jack Stands
-36mm 1/2'' Deep-dish Socket
-15mm Socket
-Breaker-bar or Leverage-bar
-Replacement Hub assembly With ABS ring

-Man's best friend for company

Steps:
1. Loosen front lug nuts
2. Jack up car and safely place jack stands
3. Remove wheels

4. Remove pin from brake calipers, and tie them up and away.

5. Take the 15mm socket and back-out the 2 bolts that hold the caliper assembly on and remove.

Re: How To: Front Wheel Bearing Hub Assembly

7. Get flat head screw driver and hammer, pry the cap little by little rotating it in a star pattern until it pops off.

8. Use your breaker-bar or leverage bar with a 1/2'' attachment with the 36mm socket to remove the wheel bearing retaining nut.

9. Remove the wheel hub assembly, mine just slid off with a little work, some have had to tap it out with a hammer.

Re: How To: Front Wheel Bearing Hub Assembly

10. Replace with new unit tapping it in a star pattern to seat it properly.

11. Reinstall Retaining nut, tighten and use your 36mm socket and torque wrench. I've read multiple how- to's regarding the TQ rating and they varied from 246ftlbs to 258ftlbs. I just went and maxed my torque wrench out at 250tqlbs.

12. Reinstall the cap, rotor and caliper assembly holder.

13. Reinstall your caliper, you might need to push the pads and pistons in to fit it over the rotor again.

14. Reinstall wheel, lug nuts, tighten them, lower the car, re-tighten the lugs again. Test drive.

Enjoy!

Re: How To: Front Wheel Bearing Hub Assembly

Nice write-up, I just did mine a few months ago. Exactly the same steps you showed, minus the use of the breaker bar, I used my impact wrench to get that beast off.

I purchased mine off of amazon, Timken was the brand. I think they were ~40 each.

This should be a sticky!!!

Re: How To: Front Wheel Bearing Hub Assembly

exactly how i did mine on my 96 a couple years ago. but i did use an impact on the hub nut instead of a breaker bar. mine didn't slide off with little work. I had to work in a circle and tap it off with a hammer. a lot of corroded spots.

Do you have to put grease on it at all?

Re: How To: Front Wheel Bearing Hub Assembly

of course none of the 10 part stores around me have the nut. Can you reuse the same nut?

Re: How To: Front Wheel Bearing Hub Assembly

Correct, no need for greasing a new unit. It has grease applied to it already. And yup you can reuse the nut. I went to Ford to get it
