Oil Separator/Catch Can driver or passenger side?

I'm sure this has come up some where in here but I can't find it. I'm trying to find out why an oil separator/catch can should be on either the driver's side, passenger side, or a combo of both.

I've heard you should do the separator on the driver's side and a catch can or prefilter on the passenger side, but I have also heard other conflicting ideas.
