Nitto NT555R

Anybody know what's a good pressure to run in the tires at the track? I've been running 18-20 psi.

If I launch against the torque converter I spin off the line. Might have to move up to a better tire.

Anybody have an opinion on the Nitto NT05R vs. the Mickey Thompson ET Street R?

Re: Nitto NT555R

The NT05r is way better then the 555r. Also have run M/T ET street II, M&H Racemaster and M/T ET street bias ply which were the best for launch but scarry as hell on the freeway. My current favorite is the NT05r @17lbs hot.
I'm going to try some of the new gen M/T's when these Nittos wear out.

Re: Nitto NT555R

555R's were good at a certain HP for me, NTO5Rs I've never used, but I'm sure they have to be better, the MTs is what I would go with if I was buying a DR

Re: Nitto NT555R

I ran mine around 16-17 as well. But this was way back when I had my 01 and the only mods were exhaust and JLT intake.

Re: Nitto NT555R

How would the 555R handle a 15 or 20 roll in first gear on a 550-570 rwhp Mach compared to the 05R? What about a second gear 40 roll? I need to make a decision in the near future. Would be nice to have the better tread life of the 555R if it can still hook well enough.

I have the 325 15" nt555r and it spins in first and shifting into second at 20psi on the street. It is a huge improvement over any normal street tire but doesn't dead hook like my mickey thompsons. For a 2nd gear roll it will hook up.

That's how my 315 555r react to those situations. Much better than a normal tire but not enough grip to snap stuff like a micky or hoosier.

Maybe I'll go with the NT05R. I'm planning to get a cheap beater soon to keep the miles off the Mustang anyway.

Im at 540 with a Vortech. I'm sure with a turbo or PD blower it would really blow the tires off. Mine will occasionally spin in the upper rpms from a roll. It wasn't driveable with my old tires, regular NT05s and also ran BFG 295s. It was a bit dangerous and not fun. With these tires I can at least have confidence driving it and can control the car better.

At my 550hp setting (6-7psi) on my turbo setup the 555r was just to dangerous to drive on the street. Well, if you stay out of boost and drive normally it is fine, but as soon as my boost is up the rear tires just break loose instantly and I literally would have a cloud of tire smoke behind me. This would happen from a roll. At 750hp setting (13psi) it was down right freaking dangerous, the car would violently break loose. At any speed or gear; as soon as the boost and the torque converter start to harmonize then instant tire spin. I will never run 555rs in the rear ever again, NT-05s looked interesting for a daily driving tire but now I just run drag radials (hoosiers) and not in the rain.

I've ran these on an 03 Cobra, 12 GT500, and now a 14 GT500 and completely agree. Better than a street tire but first gear is still useless with big HP. They start to hook up halfway though second gear on my 2014. I know a couple other guys with the NT05R on GT500s and they hook a ton better than my 555R.

Re: Nitto NT555R

Hmm, the 555R is that bad huh? What kind of mileage can I expect out of the NT05R? I never do burnouts, and don't have any plans to take it to the track. It's just going to be a weekend street toy. Maybe the occasional drive to work on a nice day. I've heard as bad as 2k miles, but that sounds a little nuts to me.

Re: Nitto NT555R

Keep in mind. No drag radials are going to survive any extended time in the canyons/twisties. You will wear the sidewalls out in one day.

I'm in the midwest with tons of straight roads everywhere.

Good to know though. Is it just from it being a much softer compound?

Dr sidewalls are designed. to absorb a certain amount of lainch or impact hit, almost like a wrinkle wall slick, I run a dedicated street set and a drag setup. Its a lot of wheels to change but I live in the canyons and love hauling *** and pulling G's as much as running the strip.

Re: Nitto NT555R

To me Sticky Mickey for the win every time and you can still throw it in a corner on the street once in a while. As Ash said the 555R are only good to a certain power level but after that it's like driving on ice.....

I run 17 x 10-1/2 rears with Sticky Mickey P315/35R17
If the size works for you I've also put some insane power through M & H RaceMaster DR's and they hook quite well at the track too
I find 16Lbs at the track on DR's is a good starting point

Re: Nitto NT555R

Nitto 555r good street tire, not bad at track with limited hp and lots of heat/burnout. 15psi cold

Mickey T drag radial. shity street tire as it will wear out at around 3000km if using at the track as well. Nitto 555r has twice the tread depth as the Mt/Hoosier.

The MT/Hoosier DR are awesome at the track with auto car and great with stick car if not launching too high. At 6000 rpm launch with 13 to 15 psi in them the tire will either hit or spin.

Hoosier is about the best for track and the worst for street. They are considered a track only tire but some people (like me) have used them on the street as well. They do have a DOT stamp but if you read the website it's only there so that Hoosier can be used in the DOT class. Waste of money for street tires but superior at track.

Never used the NT or M&H

So to the person who started the thread. I ran and I can only speak for myself, Nitto 555R's in competitive drag racing for 3 years. I first used the 17 inch on stock rims them moved to 15's when I switched out rims. I found with a 350hp stick car that 15 psi cold with about a almost 15/20 sec burnout in 1st gear with 4.10's was the sweet spot. I was running 12.2 to 12.60's with 1.71 to 1.74 60ft times. (times were all dependent on launch)

To the pro charger guy... I would not buy Nitto 555R's for your car as they will not hold a 1st gear roll out like you mentioned. Nitto 555R's do not like a hard hit of any kind. I tried my damnedest to make them work when I moved up to 400 hp and they would not take a 6000 rpm launch or a hit at 3000 rpm while rolling. Now that is with a 4.56 gear so I guess I can only ask for so much from a tire.

I now use bia ply slicks for the track as I needed the sidewall and give of a bias ply tire so I could launch at 6000 and above.

I still use the Nitto 555R for my daily street tire as I like the look of them and they do wear even and last more than 3 months on the road. ha ha. I also used BFG DR but they do not make it in a 50 series. I found them to be middle of the road for street/strip.

1st pic is 17 stock rim with Nitto 555R's. See ehow they flatten out and do not give. Not enough sidewall.
2nd pic: smokey burnout for the Nittos
3rd pic: Mickey Thompson on a 15 inch centerline. Lots of give and lots of stick. They do not need a lot of heat in burnout.
4th pic. Hoosiers DR on a 15 inch Centerline. They wrinkle and stick like a bias play tire. Very flat almost look like a block then a tire.
