Question The best ram air intake?

I have a 2004 Mach 1 and I'm thinking about getting a JLT ram air intake. When I put a CAI on my '04 V6 I felt a couple more hp, a few more mpg and it sounded better.
My car is an automatic and has a Pypes O/R x pipe, single chamber Flowmasters and 3.27 gears (don't ask why - the guy who owned it before me put them on)
Could anyone give me any advice on the best RAI?
I'm thinking about either one of these:

Thanks!

Re: The best ram air intake?

I got a great deal on a used C&L with MAF, I love it, super clean install too. I didn't really notice a difference in sound from the intake, until I got on it on the interstate in top of 3rd and 4th, sounded pretty awesome then!

Save your money and get gears instead.

But to answer your question, JLT ram air intake.

Re: The best ram air intake?

I'm trying to find a painted version of the JLT next generation intake. It's near impossible.

Does anyone know where I can find one online? I've only found one link so far:

In an intake you want the route from the filter to the throttle body as straight as possible. JLT > C&L

Which is the best? The one on your car because it's already paid for. Spend your money somewhere else unless bling is your thing.

My first Mustang back in 1992 was a 1990 GT with its stock 3:08 gears. We were getting smoked off the line by stock 1987-1989 Camaro IROCS with the 5.7. When we did the 3:73 gears with exhaust we pulled on the IROC by 2 car lengths.

The above picture is of my Mach a few years back, I now have a C&L 95 mass air housing on the unit. That has preformed the best.

Call J and JLT. He probably still has some of this orginal version laying around.
Tell him Mike told you to call.

Re: The best ram air intake?

Both of the air intake you have in your first post are JLT's. My car is the second picture. The first picture is his first design. The second picture is his "next generation" intake. I don't think you can get the first one anymore. As far as which RAI is be better I think it really depends on which one you like the design more. It's not going to make the make the car super fast. You'll gain a few hps and maybe a tenth or 2 faster. Nothing amazing.

I've never figured that one out either. Even back 20 years ago when I had my '93GT and I had a C@L 73mm Mass air meter, people were saying C@L was nothing but junk back then too. I've got a C@L on my Mach and never had a problem with either one I've had.

I wanted the C&L at first but got talked out of it because everyone figured the aluminum piping would absorb the heat in the engine bay more than plastic would.

I've always thought c and l got plenty of support. Seems like a bunch of Machs run them.

For 95% of Mach owners, that will never matter. Say you lose afew horsepower due to higher temp., unless you live at the drag strip, or WOT every stoplight you're at, you're not going to notice anything.

Honestly, I wish I had bought this CAI. I feel like I could run with this and not have a second thought about whether to use the MAF screen or not. It makes me believe they did their homework on the setup. I just let peer pressure get to me at the time.

Re: The best ram air intake?

I don't know. An intake that "doesn't require a tune" seems like it wouldn't make a significant difference. It looks pretty close to stock IMO. I agree a big straight shot to the throttle body is the way to go. That's why I got a JLT and gave my c&l to my brother for his Mach 1. Truth be told, I think you'd be better off with a more worth while mod. Listen to Stopsign- GEARS. I love my 4.10s. Defiantly a better bang for the buck

The car pulls really well at WOT and spins the tires going into 2nd. I'm not sure how much of a difference it is from the stock 3.55's though.
I just ordered a Bama tuner from AM yesterday so I'm pretty excited for it to get here. I doubt I'll get a CAI/RAI. I'm glad I got one for my V6, but this time I don't feel like it's worth the money. (spending $360 on a tuner may have something to do with me not wanting to spend more on a CAI )

Then I pose the question toyou: Are you willing to drop $300 on something that accomplishes nothing? Everyone likes bang for the buck, but no one(ok MOST) don't want to spend money on a performance mod. If I'm spending money on something, it better have some sort of positive result.

I dunno how the C&L one does, but when the challengers first came out, I went through bedding in all new brakes on my vette and was parked with the hood up at the local gas station. A loud obnoxious guy pulls up in his challenger RT and starts talking to me. Tells me how he just had his resonators removed and a MOPAR intake installed and how it was so much faster blah blah blah. It was a metal tube, nothing special, and when he wasn't looking, I touched the pipe. That thing almost burned my fingers it was so hot.

Choice between metal or plastic intake? It's a no brainer...

Re: The best ram air intake?

I've had my C@L for about 7 years. Yes, I know it does'nt add didley squat for power, but alot of stuff in my engine bay does'nt add squat either. I got my Mach the way I wanted it 5 years ago and have'nt spent anything on it since. So go ahead and add your hundreds of meaningful horsepower. Been there, done that decades ago.
