31 spline worth it?

I'm just curious if a 31 spline upgrade is worth it. My 28's held full bolt ons and a p1@10lbs and slicks while dumping the clutch at 4800-5500rpm. What's the limit on 28 spline axles?

Re: 31 spline worth it?

I bust my stock 28 spline axles after 35~ passes, launches from 4-5.8k, bolt on car lol. I would upgrade especially with a power adder, trust me, a tow home from the track isn't cheap :/

Well from what I've read, people have snapped them with less than what you're running. I don't have any personal experience of snapping them, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Re: 31 spline worth it?

It's hit or miss with 28 spline axles. Some people snap them early, some later, some not at all. I decided to do 31 spline axles so it isn't a concern (though anything can happen). Upgrading will save you huge on time and convenience. You can also sell your old parts now. You can't sell broken ones.

Re: 31 spline worth it?

I've heard slicks are easier on them than drag radials . It took 190 passes on mine to break on Mt drag radials. Then I got towed to my buddies shop.

Re: 31 spline worth it?

I've always wondered if the 28 spline mosers were good enough, they claim 35% stronger? This way I would not have to change anything else. I already put new clutch packs in, bearings and gears 20k miles ago. I would rather spend that other money else where on car if it was not required.

That's exactly what my stock axle looked like.. so I upgraded to a frpp traclok dif 31 spline and moser 31 spline axles with 3 inch ARP wheel studs and never looked back.. now its bulletproof! My stock axle broke off inside the dif where the splines attach on the driver side.

Re: 31 spline worth it?

I was on Mickey Thompson 305/35/18s with just 4.10s and bolt ons launching at 3 grand with 16psi in the rear tires.. I figured if anything was gonna happen it was gonna happen then and well it did.. plus having them fr500s didn't help anything cuz they were so heavy with them tires on there. Sold em and went back to stock.. big difference in driveability and the way it put the power down. Ill never go back to another wheel unless its weld prostars

Was that the stock 28 spline or the Moser 28 splines? If it is the Moser 28 splines then you indeed answered my question.

Re: 31 spline worth it?

It's not that the higher spline count in itself is the magic here- there is a higher spline count because they are significantly thicker than the stock tooth picks. Is there any danger of hurting anything else when it breaks? What sold me was the fact that the 31 spline shafts weren't much (if any) more expensive than aftermarket 28 spliners. If you're goin to drop the cash for new shafts, drop another $250 for the carrier. If you aren't swapping gears you won't need to set pinion depth or any if that junk. Just toss it in yourself.

Re: 31 spline worth it?

Mine were stock 28 splines, pictured beside it is my Moser 31 splines that went in. I have done 6k launches now with no issues at all.

Nice run!
I did a 4k rpm launch that shook off my abs exciter ring. I tore it all down and decided to go 31 spline.
