Clutch & Flywheel

Well, my clutch is making a lot of noise. Started with a squeaking when not in gear and now is just making noise going down the road at any speed.
Ironically it still has no problem shifting or showing any signs of slipping but I think I'm on borrowed time.

Anyway, I want to replace it with something more performance oriented but something that is for the street as I only rarely take it to the track for some fun. I was wondering what you all might suggest? And should I get an aluminum performance flywheel? I don't want anything super expensive but I'm not afraid to spend some coin on a decent kit. I was also thinking of getting an aluminum driveshaft since i have to take it out to do the clutch.

I have a 2003 Mustang Mach 1 with an Eaton swap.

Re: Clutch & Flywheel

One mans opinion…

get a stock replacement flywheel thru D&D motor sports. New ARP fasteners. Exedy clutch and pp. ( I did the Mach 350 ). Always but and use a Ford Motorsport Throwout bearing regardless of the clutch you choose. I would also replace the cable anytime I do a clutch or If you don’t have an adjustable quadrant and firewall adjuster now would be a good time…

For what you are doing that will be more than adequate. You can then have your stock flywheel turned and have it ready for your next clutch install…

Re: Clutch & Flywheel

Why do you suggest a stock flywheel?

Re: Clutch & Flywheel

1) Price
2) Transfers torque more effectively (heavy wheel) than something like an aluminum flywheel.

I prefer to run the heavier flywheel on a street car especially.

Re: Clutch & Flywheel

Hmm, I didn't think about that. Being primarily street car, I can see now why the stock flywheel would be better. Will a Mach 350 handle thw power and torque of the Eaton swap? The car also has full long tube headers, exhaust and a ram air intake. It was tuned by Wicked Motorsports in NJ. I was also going to install the HD Steeda clutch cable with metal clutch quadrant tomreplace the plastic one.

Re: Clutch & Flywheel

Probably go up to a Mach400 or look at the next level for an eaton swap car. I put the Exedy Mach 350 in my car and have been absolutely happy with it. Honestly its the best clutch I have used in the car to include the stock clutch.

Re: Clutch & Flywheel

I had an aluminum flywheel at one point, I didn't see much benefit from it personally as a street car.

I do like my aluminum drive shaft but I did buy it eons ago, I think prices have gone up quite a bit since then.

Re: Clutch & Flywheel

Ok, so i am going to stick with the stock flywheel. I think ill still get an aluminum driveshaft as it seems there is a noticeable difference. I think ill get the Exedy Mach 400 clutch though since i have the Eaton swap.
