Re: coil plug clip repair

Those clips are junk! I've broken a few. You can purchase a single coil plug wiring harness from any autoparts store. I just soldered it into the existing harness. Say you have an 04 Cobra though if you want to get the right part number. The s197 GT500s use the same coil plugs as well.

I know they're junk that's why I went to a pick your part junkyard and clipped 3 off a crown Victoria or something similar and got them each for $0.99. Would autozone have the terminal removal/repair tool so I can pop the old clips off and put the new ones in?

Re: coil plug clip repair

I just broke two of mine saturday changing the spark plugs. I went to my local pullapart and got the complete harness off a big 4 door 4.6 Mercury monarch for $3
I got 8 of them and cut one up to see how it went together. you need a small flat screwdriver like use to repair eye glasses. remove some of the electrical tape from the wires next to the clip so you can pull one wire at a time. in the end of the clip use the screwdriver to ply the red plastic piece out the clip. now use the screwdrive and push it in the end of the clip like in picture and pull on the wire should come right out

Re: coil plug clip repair

Darn! I should go to the local pull and pay and pick some up. Do all the DOHC motors use the same coil plugs? So we could get steal the connectors from the aviator, marauder, or mustang?

Re: coil plug clip repair

Ive always used a pick...you can get a pack with 2-3 dental picks from walgreens for a few bucks...sears also has a little kit by Craftsman that has some picks, a mirror and a few other things in a pouch thats not too expensive.

i would NOT recommend cutting up the harness and splicing in, just one more thing to cause issues later. Just make sure you pay attention to the wiring orientation

Yeah I'm def not going to splice the wires and heat shrink them especially on a ignition harness. I'll go down to sears tomorrow & see what I could find.

Re: coil plug clip repair

glad it worked for ya!

I had that happen in my lightning driving from NC to Orlando pulling a little trailer full of bedroom furniture. I kept looking in the mirror and seeing the 55mph speed limit sign on the fender and laughing as I was doing 70+ then every now and then Id get a super weird noise. The closest thing I could think of to describe it was like running over the little noise makers on the side of the highway but worse. I started to get worried something was up with the trailer but couldnt figure what it could be..then it got so bad it wouldnt maintain more than 50mph. darn #5 connector wouldnt stay in place, cost me $97 for them to put the computer on it at the dealer and put a zip tie on it to keep it connected
