Water pump leaking

My water pump was leaking checked the pump and everything looked good. It looked like the water was coming frome in between the pump and motor on the bottom side of the pump. So I bought a new o-ring gasket from ford for the pump and replaced it. It is leaking worse now than before. I plan on getting another gasket and trying it again. Unless any of you have any ideas.

Thanks

Re: Water pump leaking

You may have cut the o-ring during the install. I am not sure about these factory water pumps, but on other model cars I know that there is a drain hole on the bottom of the pump incase the w/p shaft seal fails. May want to look at that.

This might be a good time for go electric...

Re: Water pump leaking

It looks like it is a freeze plug that is leaking and not the gasket. So it looks like I have to buy a new water pump. I didnt know they had freeze plugs in them. Also we have the same water pumps as the gt's.

Cool Re: Water pump leaking

Pump is gone my friend that's the seal weep hole. The weep hole leaks when the seal is bad so get another pump and you will be back in business also don't forget to burp all the air out.

Re: Water pump leaking

I was reading in the workshop manual and it didnt say anything about burping. All it said was to fill the black cross tube. Which I cant get the plug out. So could you explain on burping the system.

Re: Water pump leaking

lots of new guys here now days. lots of posts on bolth burping and the cross over plug, the plug will come out easy with a touch of heat as for the burping you should do a search for the right way to do it.

Cool Re: Water pump leaking

Quick run down on burp just fill your system at the cross over and fill aux tank too. Let engine run 8 to 15 minutes to get up to temp and watch as bubbles come out of cross over then keep filling till you don't see bubbles then your done. Just did this week to mine after my electric pump took a dump and I replaced it with manual pump from Ford. If it over heats you will need to burp again! Also turn your heater switch in car to full hot to circulate all the water while burping system.

Re: Water pump leaking

Thanks for the help. I will have to try heat on the plug. What do you put on when putting it back in? Should I use pipe dope or teflon tape?

Re: Water pump leaking

I snapped two 1/4" drive adapters trying to get my plug out (that did not sound good LOL) and I ended up using just a pair of vice grips and grabbed a hold of just the plug.
