5.0 vs just the facts please

I got a s550 with a 5.0 the newest 2015 -17 is even better than the s197 2014 5.0 why ?
The intake has the charge motion plates for better low end power. The heads are a cast version of the Boss 302 heads with better ports and and larger valves. The heads also have a modified Boss 302 cams. The pistons are cast with more oil holes and an extra gas groove. The bottom end has Boss 302 rods. All this improvement means an extra 15 hp and the means to handle an extra 100 hp over the 2014 s197.
In just several years (11-14 to 15 -17 )Ford has made great improvements to their engines. Now the 2018 5.0 has been moved forward again showing an extra 40 hp at the crank.
Good work Ford !

Re: 5.0 vs just the facts please

Yup, the 18+ uses DI, more displacement (5ci), and an intake manifold similar to the GT350's design among other things.

Fords doing a great job of incrementally improving the 5.0. More than they did with the 4.6 32v. If I remember the main differences in 96-04 are basically 2 head revisions, 3 cam revisions(that got increasingly less aggressive) and 3 intake revisions?

With the Bullitt being "at least" 475hp, that means we are just a set of headers and tune away from 500 crank. Or maybe even just an e85 tune if it's in your area.

Enjoy your new car. They are fun! The '18+ 5.0 is quite the evolution on a relatively short time cycle. I love my '15 GT and look forward to my future '19 Bullitt.

Re: 5.0 vs just the facts please

Yeah it's quite amazing. From the late 1980s through 2010, the GT increased about 100 horsepower. That's snails pace growth in terms of performance. It was kind of sad actually. Lots of cars on the road would eat a Mustang GT's lunch.

Then, seemingly overnight there was a 100 horsepower jump in just one model year. The Coyote V8 brought the GT back to the limelight again. Of course, prices went insane immediately too, but I guess that's to be expected. No more $25,000 GTs with options! Lol.

The only issue I have with Ford is that the stone simple reliability that they used to offer is gone. The 5.4L Triton engines were garbage. The 3.5L EcoBoost was so awful that they scrapped it and started over with no parts from the original. And even the 5.0L Coyote engine had lot of issues with rod knock and/or ticking, water pump failures, hose connection leaks, etc. I don't hear of these things happening to Chevy LT4s or Dodge Hemi 392s. I wish Ford would take more time to field test their stuff before releasing it to the public.

I have a 5.0L in my F150 and it ticks like crazy sometimes, but with 125,000 on the odometer I'm WAY out of warranty so I'm just driving it until it dies.

Re: 5.0 vs just the facts please

Well ...all has not been good for the GM boys either.
I can remember when the 1st LS series were coming into the shop with cylinders 7 and 8 with no compression ,cracked rockers or rod knock. We put 3 motors in one car in 3 months.
Later the Vetts were getting bad 7.0 LS7 motors with bad valve guides from the factory. June of last year a class action lawsuit was filed on the ZO6 from owners who say the car does not perform at advertised.
The Dodge boys are hurting too.
The Demon, Challenger and Hellcats 392 engine... blown or not.. are fighting valve train failures, rod bearing failures, collapsed lifters, and compression loss.
Ford has had all of the above over the years too.Its a fact that ALL auto manufactures have had problems. Really it comes down to learning from mistakes and covering them under warranty if needed.

Re: 5.0 vs just the facts please

The hellcats seem to be having blowers lock up too when pullied.

the ecoboost in my 2012 F150 hasnt missed a beat (it does have the stutter from the intercooler but a drain hole fixed that). I would say its pretty normal for a second gen of an engine to be radically different. Hell, even the current gen coyote is waaaaaay different than the first.

The only 5.4 issues I was really aware of was the 2 part spark plug bs that was resolved.

5.4L garbage ?
No way.. there's a lightning on svtp with stock motor over 218k miles. That's impressive. Sure they tend to pop after 450rwhp and sling the guys out but that's a good deal of power too.
430rwhp on my 5.4 and it's been untouched in 8 years.

Re: 5.0 vs just the facts please

my 2002 5.4 L Triton engine has 207,000 miles on it now, I pull a 25 ft trailer & USE my truck! Runs like a top still.... & shows no sign of being tired yet. Only wear items replaced...An intake gasket went out at over 100K miles which they said is not unusual...I am doubtful about that one however being a wear item.

Love my 5.4 L Triton!

The shop I go to has a black 99 lightning with 230k+ on the stock bottom end. Had a timing component failure so they put on some trickflow cnc heads, mmr cams and a 4lb lower while fixing the issue. Makes 45x rwhp and a bit over 500tq. They use it for a shop truck. Fast n furious style!

Re: 5.0 vs just the facts please

That's a common problem on them. My machinist had the timing chain tensioner go out at 12k miles, bad oring. I thought I had a spun bearing when I fired it up.
